Position Overview/Essential Job Functions

Women’s Center Interns are office staff members, activists, educators, and students of women’s and gender issues in the Miami community. Duties include:

  • Staffing the front desk of the Women’s Center to greet guests, answer the phone, assist library patrons, and perform administrative work, as needed
  • Attending a weekly staff meeting
  • Planning events and programs including the Clothesline Project and others (as created)
  • Assisting the Women’s Center staff in promoting and implementing events and programs
  • Representing the Women’s Center and women’s issues by developing educational materials and staffing educational or promotional tables and/or various resource fairs
  • Giving presentations on the Women’s Center, feminism, and women’s issues for classes and organizations on campus, and as part of Intern staff development
  • Contributing to the Women’s Center’s social media-based outreach efforts
  • Developing resources for the Women’s Center
  • Working in small groups on assigned projects

Interns will:

  • Gain practical and cultural competence and professional skills
  • Gain knowledge about women’s and gender issues

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours per semester. Additionally, they must be able to work approximately 8-10 hours per week (including weekly staff meetings) and be able to commit to a full year (both fall and spring semesters) as an Intern. Candidates should also have some familiarity with women’s and gender issues.

Additional Desired Skills/Abilities

Candidates should have basic familiarity with common office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as web browsers like Google and Firefox, design software like Publisher, PhotoShop, Indesign or Canva, and social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, WordPress and Instagram. Above average oral and written communication skills are desired. Additionally, preferred candidates will be involved with co-curricular activities so as to make beneficial connections with other groups on campus but not so involved as to restrict their ability to commit to the essential job functions and requirements of the position.
