January Orientation - Pre-Orientation Checklist

1. Take the math and foreign language placement tests. New students are required to take the math and foreign language placement tests prior to attending orientation. The tests need to be completed at least one week prior to January orientation. Be sure to print your results and bring them with you to orientation. All incoming domestic students must take the Math Placement Test; you should take the foreign language placement test if you plan to take a foreign language course at any time during your Miami studies - OR if you are a student in the College of Arts and Science (as foreign language is required for Arts and Science students).  The only exception to this rule is that students who plan to begin at the introductory level of a foreign language EXCEPT for French or Spanish are not required to complete that foreign language placement test. Both French and Spanish courses DO require a placement test, even if you have no prior experience with these languages.

2. Submit an electronic medical form.  This 3-part form asks for your personal history, your family history and the dates of your immunizations. Once you've collected this information,  1) register in the health web portal using your Miami e-mail address, 2) log-in to the web portal with the password that the system e-mailed to you, 3) click on the My Forms tab, and 4) complete and submit the 3-part form.

3. Upload a photo for your Miami Student ID Card - it'll make things easier and quicker when you arrive on campus, as you can simply pick up your card rather than having a photo taken and waiting for your card to be printed.  Review guidelines for student ID photos and upload your photo on the ID card website.  If you have questions or need help uploading your photo, contact the HOME Office (Housing Options, Meals, and Events) at 513-529-5000.

4. Review the January orientation schedule. Please note that part of the January orientation program includes options to walk uptown for dinner and a coffee house social after the program on Thursday. Please bring weather-appropriate clothing (e.g. winter coat, hat, gloves, etc.) so you’re prepared to participate in these activities.

5. Check your Miami email account regularly.  Log into your MyMiami student portal using your unique ID and MUNet password, and then click on “mail” link on the left.  You’ll receive important communication from the University through your Miami email account, and you’ll also need to log in to the myMiami portal to register for courses.  If you have questions about how to login to myMiami, see MyMiami login help.

6. Review the Guidebook for New Students and the Bulletin.   Check out details on your academic major & curriculum as well as courses taught in each academic area.  You can review the Miami University New Student Guidebook via your MyMiami account or General Bulletin (which is only available online).  It's a lot of information to digest, and we don't expect you to do it on your own; academic advisors will review curricula at orientation - but the Guidebook and Bulletin are great to browse and look for classes that interest you.

7. Share access to your student records (including billing information, grads, and/or course schedule) with others who should see this information.  Particularly if someone else will be paying all or part of your tuition bill, this is a very important step!  Login to the myMiami portal with your Miami username and password.  Click on the "student" tab at the top, and find the section (in the middle column) that says, "Sharing Access to your Personal Records."  Click the link in that section that says "add additional people and/or modify access" to control who has access to which information.

8. Request disability accommodations.  Student Disability Services (SDS) provides accommodations for students with disabilities at Miami.  To be eligible for services, students must self-disclose their need for accommodations and submit supporting documentation according to current SDS guidelines.  Office contact information, documentation guidelines, how to apply for services, and additional helpful information can be found at the SDS website: MiamiOH.edu/SDS.

9. Sign up for E2Campus, Miami's emergency text-messaging system.  (This option is for students only; the E2Campus system is not designed for family members.)  To learn more about E2Campus, please visit the Miami University Police Department website.

10. Review the information about the Miami Notebook Program. If interested, students can purchase a Miami Notebook while at orientation. 

11. Explore options for majors and careers.  Nearly 1 in 5 college students change their majors, and a significant number of Miami students don't declare their major until after orientation. Use the Focus 2 online career and education planning tool (use the access code “redhawks”) to find out more about majors and careers that fit best with your skills and interests.
