Summer Reading

2019 Summer Reading Book. One Size Fits Non. A farm Girl's Search for the Promise of Regenerative Agriculture. Stephanie Anderson.

Miami welcomes new students to its engaged community of learners through the Summer Reading Program. In this important tradition, now 38 years old, we underline those activities we value most as a community: critical engagement with ideas; close interaction among faculty, staff, and students; and reading, listening, reflecting, talking, and learning as characteristics of active, responsible citizenship. As your introduction to the types of dialogues in which you will engage with other learners at Miami, the Summer Reading Program asks all new students to engage with a text during the summer and to return to campus in August prepared to discuss it with fellow students and others in breakout sessions.

Participation in the Summer Reading Program is your first assignment as a university student. Your willingness to take the assignment seriously and to participate actively in group discussions in August may have important influences on your subsequent achievements as a Miami student.

One Size Fits None: A Farm Girl's Search for the Promise of Regenerative Agriculture

After careful consideration of many fine suggestions, Miami's Summer Reading Program Committee has selected Stephanie Anderson's One Size Fits None: A Farm Girl's Search for the Promise of Regenerative Agriculture, a 2019 publication, for our incoming Class of 2023. A personal story of the author's journey throughout America's farming communities, Anderson studies and reports on efforts to adapt our current food production to more sustainable, climate friendly, and healthy practices.

Students on the committee commented, "this book conveyed a lot of information, but in an easy-to-read, enjoyable way. I really liked how it was organized with multiple different perspectives and short stories. I think that its consideration of diverse farming methods could provide a source for interesting discussions" (Caroline); "this [book] was awesome! I loved how she piques your curiosity by giving insight into her farming background and admitting that it was wrong. I also learned something after reading two other sustainable farming books!" (Amelia).

The book relates to all of us as consumers of food and as citizens of the world, to the need for healthy lifestyles, and to efforts on our campus to provide responsible food choices in procurement, preparation, and presentation.

First-year students will receive a copy of the book at summer orientation in June.
