The Institute teaches leadership through workshops and conferences. These opportunities, along with involvement in athletics, student organizations, research, and social activities, complement your academic coursework and provide a holistic approach towards your leadership and personal development. Below are the two we recommend to get you started!

Leadership Certificate Program

The Leadership Certificate Program is a two-semester experience that challenges participants to examine leadership from several perspectives and reflect on their personal leadership beliefs.

Miami Strengths Project

One critical component of being a leader is understanding yourself, including your strengths and areas for improvement. The Clifton Strengths for Students online assessment is one useful tool to help you better understand your areas of talent that can turn into strengths.

The Wilks Leadership Institute also provides direction and support for the following programs:

  • Academic Coursework, courses that introduce individual and organizational leadership theory, examine leadership in different contexts, and provide experiential activities that link theory and practice
  • Collegiate Leadership Competition, teams from schools across each region participate in a high-energy, action-filled competition where participants put their knowledge and training to use. Unique activities are designed annually by CLC 
  • Leadership Honor Societies, principal advisement for the Alpha Sigma Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society 
  • Leadership Lecture Series, 1-2 speaker events per year to bring accomplished leaders to campus to meet with students, staff/faculty, and community members
  • Leadership Workshop Series, workshops centered around core principles and values of leadership designed by Wilks staff consistent with current leadership literature
  • Lessons in Leadership Series, dialogue series for students to explore leadership within a variety of contexts
  • MPACT Alternative Break Leadership Retreat, intensive 3.5-day educational experience designed to develop students with their strengths
  • Perlmutter Leadership Conference, 1-day strengths-based student leadership conference
  • Scholar Leader Living Learning Community, upper-class, highly selective, residential living-learning community that encourages resident-guided programming, academic involvement, service learning projects, and the opportunity to explore leadership through intensive group engagement
  • U-Lead, 4-day, early-arrival, pre-semester leadership program for first-year students
  • Wilks Leadership Fellows Program, multi-year plan of individualized programming and coursework that develops leadership identity and competencies
