Video Live Streaming Best Practices

How do I livestream?
You have a couple of different options, depending on how fancy you want to get and how much money you are able to spend.

Option 1: Smartphone and Tripod

This is the cheapest and quickest option allowing you to stream on YouTube or Facebook. The video quality will be less formal. This option is only recommended for locations with a strong and steady WiFi signal.

Recommended Tools:

  • Tripod
  • Phone holder that attaches to the tripod
  • Lavalier or other type of microphone
  • Selfie light (optional)

Option 2: Laptop with a Webcam

Delivers higher quality video and audio at a relatively low price.

Recommended Tools:

  • Laptop, with a wired ethernet connection. (Wifi is an option but is prone to cutting out and is not recommended.)
  • Video Software such as OBS (free) or Wirecast. You can stream directly through YouTube or Facebook without these tools but they can improve the experience, allow you to add branded elements.
  • Webcam. Does a built-in laptop camera make up for this function?
  • Microphone and appropriate adapter for your laptop.

Option 3: Studio Produced

For live streamed video of professional quality we recommend hiring an outside vendor. Here are some local companies.
