Countdown to Content: Planning a Lecture-Less Launch

Thursday, July 30, 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

In higher education, launching into a new instructional unit or topic is frequently done with a lecture. One student-centered alternative stems from the learning cycle approach. First, students engage in an exploration of models, data, simulations, images, or short text excerpts guided by questions that increase in depth and complexity. The exploration helps students to uncover patterns and relationships and can even create cognitive dissonance. The exploration phase generates a “need to know” for the following phases: concept introduction/invention (naming events and objects) and concept application (students using concepts in new situations). This interactive workshop includes a learning cycle activity, a debrief of its characteristics, ways to move from a lecture-based to a lecture-less launch of new content, and examples of classroom materials.
