General Function

Gathers a variety of medical specimens and performs testing procedures that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of illness

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Collects samples and specimens from patients in order to perform various medical tests and procedures.
  • Performs various in-house tests on specimens; prepares other specimens for shipment so they can be tested by outside agencies.
  • Monitors the quality control of specimen collection, handling, and testing; makes necessary changes or corrections.
  • Calibrates medical testing equipment; performs preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs a variety of clerical tasks including maintaining patient logs and charts; answers telephone and direct calls.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Medical Technologist

Direction Given: Occasional training and instruction of classified staff

Minimum Requirements

Requires six months of coursework or training beyond high school in Medical Technology and one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of medical equipment and terminology
  • Knowledge of OSHA and CLIA regulations
  • Ability to operate microcomputer
