Miami University dedicates Nellie Craig Walker Hall after first Black graduate
Miami University officials dedicated the former Campus Avenue Building as Nellie Craig Walker Hall after the university's first Black graduate.  She earned a two-year teaching certificate in 1905. The Oxford native graduated from Miami in 1905, having earned a two-year teaching certificate. She became the first Black educator to student teach in the community’s public schools to a mixed-race class.  Now, she is the first woman of color to have a building named in her honor at Miami.

Miami University to honor Wayne Embry and his late wife, Terri, with the Freedom Summer of ’64 Award
Miami University will honor NBA executive and basketball icon Wayne Embry (Miami ’58) and his late wife, Terri Embry (Miami ’60), with the Freedom Summer of ’64 Award. The award is bestowed by Miami each year upon a distinguished leader who has inspired the nation to advance civil rights and social justice. Senior Research Scholar, Phyllis Cummins, Ph.D. has been heavily involved in efforts to improve adult learning and age-inclusive education. Through numerous grants, partnerships outside of Miami University, and serving on work groups and committees, Cummins is making a difference at Scripps and beyond.

Stacey Lowery Bretz elected chair of the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Education
Stacey Lowery Bretz, University Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been elected Chair of the Division of Chemical Education in the American Chemical Society for 2021. The American Chemical Society (ACS) is one of the world’s largest scientific organizations.
