University Senate - March 12, 2018 Meeting Minutes

The University Senate was called to order at 3:50 p.m., in Room 111, Harrison Hall, Oxford Campus, on Monday, March 12, 2018. Members absent:  Juan Carlos Albarrán, Kenya Ash, Susan Baim, Dana Cox, Dawn Fahner, Alan Ferrenberg, Angela Glotfelter, Chip Hahn, Janice Kinghorn, Vahagn Manukian, Amit Shukla, and Caroline Weimer.

Call to Order and Announcements

  1. Announcements and Remarks by the Chair of University Senate, Phyllis Callahan

    1. Provost Callahan reminded senators about the Provost fellows opportunities. Applications are being accepted now through the end of April.  For more information, go to the Provost website.

    2. Green Beer Day is March 15. Senators were asked to reach out to their constituents to remind them that classes are to be held as normal.

Approval of University Senate Minutes

  1. A motion was received, seconded, and carried to approve the February 26, 2018, minutes of University Senate.

Consent Calendar

  1. The following items were received on the Consent Calendar without debate.

    1. Curriculum dated February 21, 2018 

    2. Graduate Student Handbook – 1.2.B and 1.2.C

    3. Council on Diversity and Inclusion Minutes – February 6, 2018

A motion was received, seconded, and carried to approve the Consent Calendar.

New Business

  1. SR 18-06 - Applied Biology Major – Paul Harding, Department of Biological Sciences 

    1. The proposed Applied Biology major (B.S. Science) will provide regional campus students open access to a 4-year STEM program. The major will offer two concentrations and two professional certifications.

    2. The distinctions between the Applied Biology major and the existing Biology major will outlined. It was noted that the OSHA10 and HAZHOPER40 certifications will allow students to be more employable for internships.

    3. The program is incorporating seven new BSC courses that do not have an overlap with Biology courses. The department has the resources to teach and sustain the courses.

    4. There are no Applied Biology programs in the region, which makes this distinct and marketable.

    5. The following resolution was presented and approved.


SR 18-06

March 12, 2018

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate endorse the proposed degree, Bachelor of Science, with a major in Applied Biology, College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science;

AND FURTHERMORE, that the endorsement by University Senate of the proposed degree and major will be forwarded to the Miami University Board of Trustees for consideration

SR 18-06 was unanimously approved by voice vote.

  1. LCPL Report – Stephen Wright and Sherrill Sellers, LCPL Ad Hoc Committee Co-Chairs 

    1. The committee’s charge was discussed. Recommendations are being made to add a second promotion point and change existing titles.

    2. The recommendations have been vetted with Deans, department chairs, Faculty Welfare Committee, and Senate Executive Committee.

    3. There will be two resolutions at the April 2, 2018, meeting. One will address the second promotion point, and the other will address the title changes.

    4. There was discussion regarding the term lecturer vs. instructor as well including the word ‘teaching’.

Special Reports

  1. Governance Committee Report – Jim Kiper, Chair 

    1. The Committee charge and membership were discussed. The work of the Committee this year included determining appropriate allocation of Senate representational units.  The Committee, at the request of Senate Executive Committee, suggested reorganization of some Senate committees to reduce staffing concerns.  Executive Committee has decided not to move forward with these recommendations at this time.

 Report

  1. Executive Committee Report – Shelly Jarrett Bromberg, Chair 

    1. An overview of the March 5, 2018, Executive Committee meeting was given.

    2. It was announced that Terri Barr will be Interim Chair of the International Education Committee for the remainder of the semester.
