Free concerts: Wind Ensemble Dec. 6, Jazz Ensemble Dec. 8

Miami University Wind Ensemble

The Miami University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Gary A. Speck, will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Hall Auditorium.

The ensemble will perform a joint concert with the Mason High School Wind Symphony, directed by Micha Ewing (Miami ’96).

Composer David Maslanka, a special guest, will be at the concert. Maslanka’s music for winds has become especially well-known. Among his more than 130 works are forty pieces for wind ensemble, including seven symphonies, fifteen concertos, a Mass and many concert pieces.

The Wind Ensemble will perform Maslanka’s “Symphony No. 4” and the Mason Wind Symphony will perform Maslanka’s “Saint Francis: Two Studies for Wind Ensemble.”

Miami University Jazz Ensemble

The Miami University Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Jeremy Long, will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in Hall Auditorium. The program will feature the Jazz Ensemble performing the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Cincinnati native Matt Harris, among others.
