Miami University will host the second annual Schmidt Vocal Institute (SVI), an intensive summer program for talented high school singers, June 20-July 2, 2017. Participants will spend 13 days on campus and receive instruction from Miami University voice faculty as well as guest faculty from across the country. 

The 2017 guest faculty includes award-winning composer Ricky Ian Gordon, soprano Lisa Saffer (New England Conservatory), and pianist/coach Craig Terry (Ryan Opera Center, Lyric Opera of Chicago). SVI will help participants develop and hone their vocal technique, diction, and stage deportment with the program culminating in two performances of solo repertoire and Musical Theater/Opera scenes.

The 2017 Schmidt Vocal Institute also includes a new partnership with Cincinnati Opera. SVI participants will attend a performance of La Bohème, take part in a master class with soprano Nicole Cabell, and enjoy a performance and Q&A session with Cincinnati Opera Young Artist singers, Emma Sorenson and Benjamin Lee.

The Schmidt Vocal Institute is a program developed and funded by the William E. Schmidt Foundation and directed by Miami University alumna Linda McAlister (MM '01). The Schmidt Foundation has strong roots in the Miami University arts programs, supporting the William E. Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition and contributing to scholarships for students in the Miami University College of Creative Arts.

SVI singers and faculty will perform in a variety of concerts, all of which are free and open to the public.
