Safe Return to Campus Planning and Coordinating Committee
Miami announces plans for Fall 2020 return to campus.
Miami University’s Safe Return to Campus (SR2C) Planning and Coordinating Committee will provide advice and insights on the efforts taking place across the University as we prepare for the Fall 2020, following the outbreak of COVID-19 that required the closing of most on-campus operations during the spring term. Below is President Crawford’s charge to the committee, which is advisory to the President and the President’s Executive Cabinet. The committee will operate transparently, providing weekly updates to the University community at large starting in mid-May as well as regular updates to the University Senate and Presidents Executive Council (PEC).
Committee members are charged to do the following:
1. COORDINATE: Coordinate communication and actions among units on campus in the spirit of our core values, thinking on behalf of the institution as a whole. Be a conduit for information exchange between units and broader university communications. The committee will provide updates to the community through web communications.
2. LISTEN: Gather and share ideas and challenges from members of our community about a safe return to campus and how to provide a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, and staff.
3. RESEARCH: Develop an ongoing environmental scan on other universities’ actions and plans. Track national trends and share the broader landscape in higher education with our community.
4. EVALUATE: Assess all guidance and health practices for the safe return to face-to-face instruction and student life and activities. Track the recommendations and inform on guidance and protocols coming out of the Ohio Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, and the World Health Organization. Understand impact of guidelines on residential campus living and academics, teaching and learning.
5. COLLECT: Provide guidance and serve as a sounding board for the many ideas that are proposed around permutations of academic scheduling, large-scale events (especially those in the fall, such as convocation) and so forth. Provide input through multiple “lenses” to proposals. Evaluate government mandates and recommendations to provide input on implementation.
6. LEARN: Gather and assess lessons learned from the crisis, both negative and positive. Understand what actions and strategies have worked and not worked. Assess lessons learned and how they might be useful to the organization in the future as part of campus operations and planning: remote interactions, pedagogy, advising, student services, communications, collaborations, etc.
