#MoveInMiami Gifts Allow More Students to Study Abroad

By Kristin Magyari, Assistant Director for Communications & Marketing, Global Initiatives

#MoveInMiami is a fun, fast-paced fundraising event on move-in day. While the newest members of the Miami family unpack, we welcome them by giving back.

On Thursday, August 23, 4,493 donors raised $1,593,003. The fundraiser was a success overall and for Global Initiatives.

Raising funds for study abroad scholarships was the goal of Global Initiatives this year.

Miami University currently ranks number 3 in the nation among public doctoral universities for undergraduate student participation in study abroad programs, with 46.3 percent of students studying abroad before they graduate.

Dr. Cheryl D. Young, Assistant Provost of Global Initiatives, expressed the importance of studying abroad for Miami students: “The Miami Code of Love and Honor encourages us to embrace the opportunities and challenges of a Miami Experience to make the world a better place. Study abroad is an experience that our students can have which builds skills and knowledge to prepare them to solve the world's most difficult challenges and compete in the 21st century workforce.”

Global Initiatives would like to thank our donors and express appreciation for the generous contributions. When the official #MoveInMiami campaign ended at 2:22am (because we are welcoming the class of 2022 to campus) on move-in day, our preliminary campaign resulted in:

The Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

  • 33 total gifts
  • $2,805.09 raised

“Your gift to the study abroad scholarship fund makes it possible for students to engage with other cultures and people around the world,” Young said. “It is through the global people-to-people connections and immersion into unfamiliar cultures that our students will go into the world and make a difference. Thank you for your support for Study Abroad at Miami University!”

The day was full of excitement in MacMillan Hall and around campus. Global Initiatives staff members joined the fun by donating to #MoveInMiami, going live on Facebook, and enjoying the “party in a box” sent from University Advancement. In one Facebook live video, Jordan Land, Miami University John E. Dolibois European Center (MUDEC) Coordinator exclaimed, “Fun fact for class of 2022: MUDEC is one of the oldest study abroad programs in the country and a fantastic way for you to spend a semester discovering all of Europe. Your gifts are appreciated because they help us send as many Miami students abroad as possible.”

Miami University is committed to graduating global leaders who will make an impact on the world. Your gifts make this possible.
