9 Winter Programs in The Americas

Miami University offers a variety of education abroad opportunities. Here are nine winter programs that take place in Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. Many programs are open to students of all majors.
Culture, ELs, Writing, and Research

Broaden your perspective of teaching and language development while learning from local community members and working with English Language Learners in Belize.
Design Thinking in a Global Health Context: Belize
Location: San Ignacio, Belize
Apply design thinking and research methods to address the unique global health challenges of the Caribbean island of Belize. Students will gain important professional skills while developing innovative solutions.
Flora of the Bahamas
Locations: Andros Island in the Bahamas
Gain unique field experience within the environmental diversity of the Bahamas, from pine forests to mangrove swamps. Students will be introduced to flora much different than that of the central United States.
Health Care Service Learning in Belize
Location: Various locations, Belize
Experience first-hand the culture of Belize and its impact on community health while working alongside local physicians and healthcare workers and conducting community triage.
Integrating Spanish and Health in Costa Rica
Locations: Atenas & Nicoya, Costa Rica
Through service-learning, visits to local health centers, and studies in one of the world's healthiest and longest-lived communities, students learn the local culture and health care while increasing their Spanish proficiency.
Outdoor Leadership in Costa Rica
Locations: Various locations across Costa Rica
Lead a group of your peers hiking, camping, and waterfall rappelling through the Costa Rican jungle. This program is a unique opportunity to develop decision making and relationship building skills.
Tropical Ecosystems of Costa Rica
Locations in Costa Rica: Various
Investigate the astonishing diversity of tropical ecosystems through field experiences in tropical rainforests, coral reefs, sea turtle nesting sites, the Arenal Volcano, and indigenous communities.
Urban and Environmental Change in Peru
Locations: Lima, Cusco, & Ollantaytambo, Peru
Examine the connected but different worlds of megacity Lima and historical Cusco to understand Peru’s evolving relationship with the environment and how this can inform 21st-century sustainability.
