Learning Opportunity Descriptions

JEP Learning Opportunities are a set of approved courses designed to expand the knowledge, skills, and abilities of Classified staff members at Miami University. Learning opportunities may be modified based on the business needs of the University.

All eligible coursework must be completed while employed at Miami University as a Classified staff member. Courses completed prior to being accepted into the JEP will not count for JEP credit. All eligible courses must also include a tested learning outcome or skill assessment. Effective January 1, 2015, JEP participants may be awarded credit for two non-tested learning opportunities, earning up to a combined maximum of 40 total points, per calendar year pending the course approval process. This may include conferences, seminars, webinars, etc.

Courses not listed below may be considered for Job Enrichment credit by completing the Course Approval/Point Request Form and attaching the necessary documentation as listed on the form. Course approval requests will be reviewed by a JEP Administrators. All decisions are final. (Courses considered part of your required job training are not eligible for Job Enrichment credit.)

Academic Course

Academic courses offered by Miami University as well as other educational institutions may be eligible for Job Enrichment credit. Please note: All costs associated with academic courses are the responsibility of the employee (tuition fee waiver benefit may apply for Miami University courses).

American Culinary Federation (ACF)

Chefcertification.com is an online learning portal providing access to online training courses specific to nutrition, cooking, and the culinary fields. Chefcertification.com provides user-friendly online courses that help aspiring chefs reach their ACF Chef Certification goals. By taking courses using our self-paced online service, staff earns the required credit hours for initial certification or certification renewal, all from the comforts of home or the confines of work. There are no term schedules; students may register online at any time.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • The course must be on your curriculum; if not, see Course Approval/Point Request Form process.
  • All quizzes/tests are automatically graded online. After each quiz, a list of missed questions (and your answers) is generated by the database. This gives you a better opportunity to brush up on your knowledge, and (if needed) take the quiz again.
  • Once you complete the course, you are greeted with a confirmation of completion. You will receive an authentic certificate of completion via email within a week.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form.

American Institute of Baking (AIB)

AIB classes equip graduates with skills and confidence to innovate, develop new products, and to troubleshoot production problems based on a curriculum that synthesizes science and baking tradition. For correspondence courses (hard copy book and online tests), enrollments are accepted at any time. There are no fixed starting dates. Each course is made up of a series of lessons; each lesson takes between six-eight hours to complete. Each course must be completed in either six months or one year (see course details.)

  • Obtain a grade of 70% or higher.
  • Obtain certificate of completion, congratulatory letter, and summary grade report.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form.

American Management Association (AMA)

American Management Association (AMA) courses are self-study books designed to enhance your professional development skills. All AMA courses include a multiple choice pre-test and post-test.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • Course must be on your curriculum; if not, see Course Approval/Point Request Form process.
  • Follow the “How to take this course” instructions in the front of the AMA course book.
  • Submit pre-test answer form to AMA for grading (optional).
  • Submit post-test answer form to AMA for grading.
  • Obtain a letter indicating grade of 70% or greater on the post-test.
  • Obtain a certificate for case study courses.
  • Re-testing:
    • If a post-test score is below 70%, the test can be retaken one time. See Job Enrichment Administrator for details.
  • Return AMA course book to a JEP Administrator unless otherwise arranged.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form with appropriate documentation.

CE Direct

CE Direct provides online learning opportunities for allied health professionals and nutrition professionals.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • Obtain a grade of 75% or greater on the overall assessment.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form.

Cleaning Management Institute (CMI)

Cleaning Management Institute (CMI) is a Custodial Technician self-study book that is split into two levels, Basic and Advanced. The Basic Level includes six modules, and the Advanced Level contains three modules. Each module covers a different cleaning subject and each has a corresponding proctored, certification exam.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • Course must be on your curriculum; if not, see Course Approval/Point Request Form process.
  • Contact your JEP Administrator to schedule tests and re-tests.
  • Obtain a grade of 80% or greater on each module test.
  • Re-testing:
    • If the test score is below 80%, the test can be retaken after 3 weeks from the original test date.
    • Each module is graded independently; therefore, you only need to retake the modules in which a score below 80% was received.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form.

Education Institute (EI)

The American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) offers more than 30 hospitality management courses, available through traditional home study (correspondence courses called “Distance Learning” Opportunities) or online through our “CourseLine®” program. Take individual courses or work toward earning Areas of Specialization certificates, a Hospitality Fundamentals certificate, a Hospitality Operations certificate, a Hospitality Management Diploma or a Food and Beverage Management Diploma.

  • Must earn above a 70% on the proctored exam to obtain the course completion certificate.

National Retail Federation (NRF)

The NRF Foundation’s certification programs help individuals advance their careers. Retail Management Certification is available online only (PC based) for both courses and examinations. NRF also offers a self-study Customer Service Certification that is available for course content in a textbook format and course examinations in an online format.

NCCER

The training programs offered by NCCER meet national industry standards. Individual modules may be completed at home and at the participant’s pace. Course completion timeframe may vary for each module. See your Job Enrichment Program Administrator for details.

Penn Foster

Develop your skills with accredited, trade-specific training from Penn Foster. This program provides hands-on training and practical exercises that will allow you to receive a career diploma. The coursework may be completed at home, and at a pace that’s right for you. The completion timeframe varies for each program. See your Job Enrichment Program Administrator for details.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • The course must be listed under learning opportunities.
  • Obtain a passing grade for the course.
  • The Course Approval/Point Request Form with appropriate documentation must be submitted (apprenticeship points do not expire).

Skillport

Skillport (Miami unique ID and password required) is an online learning portal providing access to online training courses designed to enhance your business and technical skills.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • Must spend a minimum of 35% of the vendor’s expected duration in the course.
    • For example, a Skillport course listed on your curriculum worth two points, the vendor-recommended duration is two hours. To satisfy the 35% of the vendor-recommended duration, an individual would need to spend at least 42 minutes on the course. To calculate the required time, change hours to minutes and multiply by .35. The following would be how to calculate a two-hour Skillport course: 120 x .35 = 42.
  • Obtain a grade of 70% or greater on the overall assessment.
  • Skillport briefs, simulations, and videos are not eligible for Job Enrichment credit.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form.

TPC Training

TPC Training consists of self-study books designed to enhance industrial, maintenance, and business skills for service and maintenance professionals. Each course consists of multiple lessons, programmed exercises, and self-check quizzes for optimal learning. All courses include a final exam proctored by the appropriate Job Enrichment Administrator.

  • Contact your JEP Administrator to schedule tests and re-tests.
  • Obtain a grade of 70% or greater on the final exam.
  • Re-testing:
    • If the test score is below 70%, the test can be retaken after 3 weeks from the original test date.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form.

Universal Class

Universal Class is an online learning program offered through local public libraries that provides a diverse offering of intellectually stimulating courses for people interested in the lifelong pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons.

Access: Lane Library and other public libraries

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • Contact Your JEP Administrator with course questions and possible approved courses
  • Course is taken online
  • Course test is completed and a certificate of completion is awarded
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form.

Other Tested Learning Opportunities

Other tested learning opportunities may be eligible for Job Enrichment credit. These could include online courses, conferences, facilitated training, etc.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • Other tested learning opportunities not listed must follow the Course Approval/Point Request Form process
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form with appropriate documentation. This could include:
    • Detailed agenda with a timeframe (lunch/breaks, roundtable discussions, safety topics, and compliance courses are not eligible for Job Enrichment credit).
    • Event description with learning objectives.
    • Proof of successful completion.
    • Documentation from learning vendor indicating test results, passing score requirement, and/or certification hours.

Non-Tested Learning Opportunity

Effective January 1, 2015, Job Enrichment Participants have the ability to receive Job Enrichment credit for two non-tested learning opportunities (e.g., course, seminar, conference, audited academic course) earning up to a combined maximum of 40 total points per calendar year, pending the Course Approval process. All non-tested learning opportunities must be relevant to participant’s job description.

Job Enrichment Process and Credit Requirements:

  • Non-tested learning opportunities not listed and must follow the Course Approval/Point Request Form process.
  • Submit Course Approval/Point Request Form with appropriate documentation. This could include:
    • Detailed agenda with a timeframe (lunch/breaks, roundtable discussions, safety topics, and compliance courses are not eligible for Job Enrichment credit).
    • Event description with learning objectives.
    • Learning event provider information (organization, instructor name, phone, website, email address, etc.).
    • Proof of attendance.

Human Resources Staff Development Workshops (HRSDW)
