STATA Lab Maintenance Renewal

Project Title: STATA Lab Maintenance Renewal

Project Lead's Name: Bryan Marshall

Phone: (513) 529-0161

Please Choose the Primary Affiliation: CAS

Are There Other Project Team Members? No

Brief description of project: With funds from a prior FY16 Tech Grant Award, the Political Science Department was able to purchase server space and STATA statistical software to be used for undergraduate and graduate methods classes. The software is made available remotely which significantly improves student usage and access for instruction. For this grant, we are requesting funds to pay for software renewal and maintenance renewal. The cost for this is $1120.00

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life? Yes

If yes, please explain: The remote access and software is used heavily by undergraduates for POL 306 but also by graduate students enrolled in POL 603 and 604. Undergraduate also have access for research projects/independent studies and many graduate students also make use of the software for final MA projects.

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem. The grant will provide us with another year of remote access capability and STATA license software usage. These are critical to the undergraduate methods and graduate methods courses we teach in POL.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project? The remote access provides significant innovation and capacity for undergraduate students and graduate students to utilize the statistical software from anywhere and at anytime. This greatly improves the ability of students to learn and the time they can spend working on projects and work through research assignments that utilize empirical data. The hands-on applications with the software is a central component of how the students learn to work with data and apply statistical tools.

How will you assess the project? We assess the project by evaluating how well the students are integrating what they learn in the classroom with hands-on analysis they do with the software and from their ability to work with the software. Key aspects of this include extracting information from the data and explaining what the patterns and statistical tools mean in practice.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years? Yes

If funded, what results did you achieve? We were able to develop student capacity and access to STATA statistical software that serves both undergraduate and graduate students.

Did you submit a final report? Yes

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded? Beyond year two there will be approximately $1120 renewable costs for the software.
