Professional Experience

Prior to coming to Miami, Katy spent almost a decade in community and public health, serving as a public health nurse and supervisor for a local health department. Her experience includes communicable disease surveillance and epidemiology, adolescent and reproductive health, home visiting, early childhood development, early intervention, quality assurance, community health education, and nurse leadership.

Service

Katy serves as a member of the Educational and Professional Development Committee and the Emergency Preparedness Committee for the Association of Public Health Nurses. This is a national organization for public health nursing professionals focused on advocacy and implementation of best practices in population health. Additionally, she serves as the Secretary of the Omicron Chi Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. At Miami, she is a faculty advisor for the Miami Oxford Student Nurse Association (MOSNA).

Research

Katy’s research interests focus on innovative strategies in nursing education related to population health, disaster response, and health policy advocacy. Her disciplinary interests focus on the effectiveness of health promotion activities in the community related to harm reduction, mental health and coping, and adolescent health.
