Also reported is the increase in adult deaths from accidents (including overdose) and COVID-19 since 2015 is 66%. InsideOut Studio is a vocational habilitation program that employs individuals with disabilities. This program provides the opportunity for artists with disabilities to produce, market, and receive an income from their art, while gaining confidence in their abilities. Art is for everyone, but unfortunately, artists with disabilities typically earn only 42% compared to their peers. Over 87% live in poverty. There is a significant need for programs like InsideOut, which not only encourage and develop the talent of artists with disabilities, but provide formalized training on how to market, present, and sell their art professionally. Transportation is a prevalent area of concern for many communities, especially the developmental disabilities community. In the 2012 Ohio Mobility Improvement Study, transportation was the number one issue cited as a barrier to resource access and community integration for Ohioans with disabilities. Inspiration Studios has developed Inspired Transportation to combat this barrier in Butler County. |

Position Details Shelter Programming Specialist
Number of Positions Available: 1
Program Description |
This change agent's primary responsibility will be to plan and implement programming focused around the positive development of shelter residents. Many of the residents we provide temporary housing for have been directly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic in multiple facets. In 2019, a study was conducted finding that 59% of U.S. households were one missed paycheck away from becoming homeless. While we are awaiting this study to be replicated in a post-pandemic America, we can only suspect the issue has amplified. Providing regular, weekly programming that focuses on career development has the potential to open the door for them to move forward toward self-sufficiency in a post-pandemic world. |
---|---|
Specific Tasks | The change agent will be responsible for creating and scheduling intentional programs aimed at fostering positive development for adults experiencing homelessness. Their assigned role will include researching best practices and models, coordinating the facilitation of existing programs through community partners, preparing and delivering presentations for relevant topics (i.e., financial literacy, resume building, mock job interviews), and engaging directly with residents to identify needs. The change agent will establish and regularly update a community board to be located in the shelter indicating class topics and dates. They will be expected to measure specified outcomes/objectives while collecting relevant data. |
Fundraising Responsibilities | The change agent may spend less than 10% of their efforts on creating visualizations and other publicity materials for the Serve City fall hunger awareness fundraiser. |

Position Details English Language Learner Support
Number of Positions Available: 1
Program Description |
The programs that my member would support would help ELLs to build skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. These programs are workshops, serving as an opportunity to build community and connection, both at Miami and in and with the surrounding community. Miami ELL students who increase these skills become more successful students, and non-Miami ELLs in the community who increase these skills have an increased ability to move up in their jobs or retain even better employment opportunities, as well as an increased ability to interact with the English-speaking community in which they live, and to better their lives as a whole. |
---|---|
Specific Tasks |
An AmeriCorps change agent would help support and develop efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion by way of English Language Learner (ELL) programs, namely workshops, both for Miami students, and members of the surrounding community. The member would help lead workshops in reading/writing and listening/speaking, using material provided, introducing new lessons/skills to be learned, and assisting as the student works through the various assignments. The member would look for ways to improve the workshop programs, by being aware of the ways that program recipients are best gaining skills, and by pinpointing areas that are not so helpful and communicating that to me. The member would look for ways to increase numbers of students/community members who are attending by brainstorming ideas for "marketing" our programs to the internal and external population. The member would also brainstorm new programs which may benefit current and potential recipients. |
Preferred Skills |
Applicants need to be able to "connect" well with others, to reach out and communicate effectively and clearly through leading workshops, as well as practice patience in supporting workshop attendees as they develop speaking/listening and reading/writing skills. Applicants need to be understanding of the difficulties that non-native speakers of English often face, and must be able to create opportunities to build community with them. Applicants need to be transparent in an effort to share experiences and struggles, which will form connection between them and program recipients. Applicants need to be creative about ways to improve cultural understanding. |
