Upward Bound

Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a free U.S. Department of Education program designed to help veterans refresh their academic skills and give them the confidence needed to successfully complete their college degree or postsecondary vocational training program.

VUB provides a variety of services to assist veterans in beginning or returning to postsecondary education.

  • All participants must have at least 180 days of active duty, other than for training, with a discharge status other than dishonorable as reflected on your DD-214. A waiver is available for recently discharged combat veterans. If less than 180 days, it must be due to a medical reason.
  • All participants must be of limited income (based on family income and number of dependants) or potential first-generation college students (i.e., neither parent earned a four-year college degree).
  • All participants must demonstrate academic potential as well as have academic need. Not all students have the same needs. Some students require developmental course work, while others need information and advisement.
  • All participants must live within the following counties:

Ohio: Brown; Butler; Clermont; Hamilton; and Warren
Kentucky: Bracken; Boone; Campbell; Gallatin; Grant; Kenton; and Pendleton
    Indiana: Dearborn, Franklin, and Ohio.
