Miami's public health program engineers a new contact tracing program for Butler County to fight COVID-19
Early this summer, after the COVID-19 pandemic had already swept across the country and shut down college campuses and businesses around the world, Miami's public health program began to put together a plan to help track the virus's rampant spread throughout the local community.

Miami fire scientist: "Zombie fires" one of new features driving Arctic fires
A number of fires in Sakha Republic, Russia, from June 25, 2020, typical across tundra ecosystems in June. Fire activity suggests direct relationships between burning and permafrost thaw in this region of cold but ice-rich permafrost (McCarty et.al.)."Zombie fires" and burning of fire-resistant vegetation are new features driving Arctic fires — with strong consequences for the global climate — warn international fire scientists in a commentary published this week in Nature Geoscience. "We need new approaches to wildland fire fighting to save the Arctic — there's no time to lose."

Miami University's Humanities Center has developed a new Laptop Lectures series this fall on race and racism. These online lectures are short videos recorded by faculty members in social isolation and connect humanities research to contemporary social challenges.

Emma Bradley (Miami '20) started student teaching in a third-grade class in Oxford last January before COVID-19 forced classes to move online for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.As Miami University resumes in-person classes this week, faculty and students are shifting gears — just as they did six months ago when the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly forced everyone to move online. Faculty in the College of Education, Health and Society have risen to the challenge to provide the best possible opportunities for future teachers — and new teachers like Emma Bradley (Miami ’20).
