What discoveries could you make at Miami?
Be inspired by the experiences of our College of Education, Health & Society students:
Harry Reu
Class of 2016
Major: Kinesiology
Working with Dr. Randy Claytor, Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Health, Harry examined the relationship between muscle fatigue, heart rate, and blood lactate levels. He’s confident that this type of hands-on research experience will help him stand out when he’s applying to physical therapy graduate programs.
"We worked directly with research subjects by hooking them up to machines while they exercised, giving them finger prick blood tests, and measuring their heart rates and blood lactate levels. Based on what I’ve learned, I’m sure that I want to follow this kind of career path."
Noel Novak
Class of 2017
Major: Early Childhood Education
Minor: 2-Dimensional Media Studies
As an early childhood education major, Noel knows that great teachers are the ones who build solid relationships. Whether she’s tutoring at an elementary school, volunteering at a homeless shelter, or building homes with Habitat for Humanity, Noel finds that serving others exposes her to diverse viewpoints and prepares her to become a dynamic educator.
"I wanted to do something where I could help people and make an impact on their lives. But it’s not just about me helping kids. They’re teaching me just as much as I’m teaching them. You can learn so much from the people you’re working with."
Leah Dickman
Class of 2016
Major: Family Studies
Minor: Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
Planning to become a child life specialist, Leah interned at a social service agency in Hamilton, Ohio, where she acted as an advocate for victims of domestic violence, worked with children in a free-lunch program, and helped families cope with divorce.
"All of the professors are so awesome and you can tell they enjoy what they’re doing. It’s funny how many things from classes I recall while I’m working. I know I’m doing a good job because I have also learned about these things in class. I like to think it gives me an edge on the interns that haven’t studied this before."
