Assessment and Prevention of Suicide in India

Assessment and Prevention of Suicide in India

Over 800,000 people die by suicide every year worldwide. Of these, 170,000 or 20% are in India due to high population density.  A majority of deaths by suicide in India are among people under the age of 30. In our work, we try to better understand factors that contribute to suicide among young people, and explore the feasibility of various prevention approaches through a combination of qualitative and survey-based methods. Our studies have included samples from major urban cities in India, as well as resource-limited settings such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
