Remote Mental Health Services Expand

Student Counseling Service Sign

Miami’s Student Counseling Service (SCS) continues to expand remote services for students living away from campus, adding telebehavioral health services (i.e. telecounseling) for eligible students this week.

To be eligible, students must be full-time Oxford students physically located in Ohio, due to licensing regulations determined by the state. Telebehavioral health is not appropriate for students with all mental health needs. If SCS staff determines that a student does not meet the treatment criteria, they will assist with an appropriate referral.

For students not currently in Ohio, SCS will still assist with self-care plans, case management, personal consultation check-ins, and emergency and crisis services via phone, as they've been doing for the past month. Additionally, all students have access to the H.O.P.E. Line and Virtual Campus Care sessions.

H.O.P.E. Line

All students, regardless of physical location, can call the H.O.P.E. Line (855-249-5649), available 24/7 for immediate support from a licensed mental health counselor.

This service is available for students who are in crisis, need immediate assistance, and/or who just want to talk about any issue. Counselors will provide information on emergency resources, consult on issues, and listen. The H.O.P.E. Line should not be used to replace the regular, ongoing care of a mental health professional.

Virtual Campus Care - Drop-in Sessions

Campus Care is a now-virtual option for students to consult with a trained mental health professional in a less formal setting than a counseling appointment. Campus Care is a "drop-in" service via WebEx. Students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Usually there is not much of a wait.

Conversations are typically about 20 minutes long or less.

Campus Care will be held from April 13 to May 15, 2020, with the following schedule:

  • Mondays, 1:30 - 3:30pm EST
  • Tuesdays, 1:30 - 3:30pm EST
  • Wednesdays, 10:00am - 12:00pm EST
  • Thursdays, 1:30 - 3:30pm EST
  • Fridays, 1:30 - 3:30pm EST

Upon arrival to the WebEx, students are placed in a “Virtual Lobby” if the counselor is already with another person or is unavailable; students will receive a message that the host (counselor) will admit the next student when ready.
