Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors consists of Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Kelly Mallory, Dr. David F. Wilson (past Director of the Center), alumni healthcare professionals, representing a variety of specialties, and one medical student.

Dr. Richard Blath - Chair

photo of Dr. Richard BlathDr. Richard Blath (Miami, 1968) is the Chief of Urology with St. Louis Urological Surgeons at Christian Northeast Medical. He has special interest in the areas of incontinence, prostate disease, and infertility. He is one of the few surgeons in the St. Louis area who performs vasectomy reversal surgery. Dr. Blath also served in the U.S. Air Force as Chief of the Urology Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Blath graduated from Miami in 1968 with a degree in Zoology, received his M.D. from Washington University in 1972, and served his internship at Vanderbilt in Nashville.


Dr. Deborah Wilson - Vice Chair

photo of Dr. Deborah WilsonDr. Deborah Wilson (Miami, 1984) graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arizona's School of Medicine. Deborah practices with Galion Emergency Room Physicians (Galion, OH) and Premier Physician Services (Dayton, OH). She served in the United States Air Force from 1989–1996 and retired with the rank of Captain. While at Miami, Deborah was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and the AFROTC. She is a former member of the Alumni Band and a past Reunion Weekend Committee member.


Bertz, Dr. James

Dr. James Bertz (Miami, 1956) is a Oral Maxillofacial surgeon in Scottsdale, AZ.  He received his M.S. from The Ohio State University in 1960 and his D.D.S. in 1961. He then pursued a M.D. from Baylor University in 1974. He resides in Scottsdale with his wife Sandy and has four children James, Robert, Stephen, and Jennifer.


Dolan, Mr. Dan

photo of Mr. Dan DolanMr. Dan Dolan (Miami, 2012) is a medical student at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He is about to enter his fourth year of medical school and plans to pursue a career in Academic General Surgery and most likely specialize in cardiothoracic surgery.


Friedman, Dr. Roger 

photo of Dr. Roger FriedmanDr. Roger Friedman (Miami, 1974) graduated from Miami University and went on to Ohio State University Medical School. He did a three year residency with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and then a two year fellowship in allergy at the University of Pittsburgh and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He returned to Columbus where he begin his practice for the next thirty-three years. In January 2015, Dr. Friedman became a partner and vice president of Ohio ENT and Allergy Physicians. Dr. Friedman has served on many boards and received numerous awards, including The Lifetime Achievement Award from Ohio Start Medical School (2007), Career Contribution Award Nationwide Children’s Hospital (2008), and the Ohio State University College of Medicine Alumni Service Award (2014). Dr. Friedman and his wife of forty years, Marilyn Bondy Friedman, have had 2 daughters graduate from Miami University, Michelle Friedman Winograd (2003) and Abbie Friedman Devendra (2006). They hope to see their two grand- daughters Julia and Olivia graduate from Miami University in 2033 and 2037.

Gehring, Dr. Paul

photo of Dr. Paul GehringDr. Paul Gehring (Miami, 1985), originally from Cincinnati,Oh, now practices with Tulsa OB GYN in Tulsa, OK. He received his bachelor’s degree in Zoology. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Cincinnati. Dr. Gehring completed his residency in Houston, Texas at the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Gehring achieved his OB/GYN specialty board certification in 1996 and has completed his board recertification annually since then. He is currently a licensed physician through the State of Oklahoma and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He currently lives and practices in Tulsa Oklahoma with his wife who is also an OB/GYN. They have four children together. He has a daughter currently attending Miami.


Hirsh, Dr. Richard

photo of Dr. Richard HirshDr. Richard Hirsh (Miami, 1965) joined the medical staff in the Department of Radiology at Akron City Hospital/Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. During his 37 years of radiology group practice, he performed general diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and breast imaging. Over the course of several years, his duties included division chief of diagnostic radiology and acting chief of nuclear medicine. He retired in 2010. He received his bachelor's degree in Zoology. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College. Dr. Hirsh completed his residency Diagnostic Radiology in 1973 at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York, NY. From 1975 through his retirement in 2010 he held the academic rank of Assistant Professor of Radiology at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 1996 he founded Radiology Mammography International, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to organize international medical projects focusing on mammography and breast-cancer training missions to underserved regions in developing countries. Over the past 28 years he has completed over 40 mission projects all around the world. In acknowledgement of these humanitarian achievements, he has received numerous awards and recognitions including the Bishop Medal for Humanitarianism from The Alumni Association of Miami University. Dick and his wife, Marcia, Miami '66, a "Miami Merger", celebrated 50 years of marriage in June 2017. Their older daughter, Deborah, is also a Miami graduate, Class of 1992.


Hogarth, Dr. Kyle

photo of Dr. Kyle HogarthDr. Kyle Hogarth (Miami, 1994) is Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Bronchoscopy and Minimally Invasive Diagnostics at the University of Chicago. He is an expert in pulmonary diseases focusing on lung cancer diagnostics and therapeutics as well the genetic form of emphysema: Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency. His research focuses on improving the tools and techniques used to diagnose, manage, and treat lung cancer and airways diseases. He is an authority on techniques such as Bronchial Thermoplasty for asthma and IntraBronchial Valves for airleaks and emphysema management. He graduated from Miami in 1994 with a B.A. in Chemistry, Microbiology, and Zoology. He received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1998.


Karnes, Dr. Jon

Dr. Jon Karnes (Miami, 2009) is a Resident in Orthopaedics at West Virginia University School of Medicine. He graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2013. He graduated Cum Laude from Miami University in 2009 with a double major in Zoology and Economics and a Business thematic sequence. As an undergraduate, Mr. Karnes served as a student representative to the Mallory-Wilson Center Board of Directors in 2006 and in 2007. During this time, he proposed and assisted with the development of a Mallory-Wilson sponsored Living Learning Community for first year students at Miami University. Currently, the Living Learning Community has expanded to include over 100 first year students and provides many opportunities to enhance the experience of Miami students pursuing a career in medicine. Mr. Karnes has been the medical student representative to the Mallory-Wilson Center Board of Directors since 2010 and continues to participate in Mallory-Wilson Living Learning Community programming events.

Mallory, Dr. Thomas H. and Mrs. Kelly S. Mallory

photo of Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Kelly MalloryDr. Thomas Mallory (Miami, 1961), now retired, is the founder of Joint Implant Surgeons. He performed the first total hip and knee replacements in Columbus, Ohio in 1971. His interest in biomedical engineering led to the design of the Mallory Head Total Hip System which is used internationally. Dr. Mallory and his wife Kelly provided the gift that established the Mallory-Wilson Center back in 1994.

Molden, Ms. Michele

photo of Ms. Michele MoldenMs. Michele Molden (Miami, 1977) was Executive Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer at Piedmont Health Care in Atlanta, GA. until she moved to Nashville, Tn in 2015 to join The Advisory Board Company as Partner and Senior Vice President. Ms. Molden received her Bachelor of Arts from Miami University and her Master of Business Administration from Kennesaw State University. In addition, Michele attended the American Hospital Association Healthcare System Transformation Fellowship and serves on the board of directors for the Eugene Stetson College of Business at Mercer University. In 2009, Michele was voted a Top 25 Women in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare.


Walpole, Ms. Jessica

photo of Jessica WalpoleMs. Jessica Walpole (Miami, 2015) graduated Summa Cum Laude with Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and Zoology, and a minor in Neuroscience. She is currently a second-year medical student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and is interested in pursuing a career in primary care, specifically pediatrics and/or geriatrics.


Walvoord, Dr. Emily

photo of Dr. Emily WalvoordDr. Emily Walvoord (Miami, 1989) is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She graduated cum Laude from Miami with a BA in Zoology and went on to attend Northwestern University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency and served as a Chief Resident at Northwestern's Children's Memorial Hospital (now Lurie Children's Hospital). She then moved to Indiana University Medical School (IUSM) for her fellowship in pediatric endocrinology and went on to accept a faculty position in pediatric endocrinology. She served for 4 years as an associate residency program director in pediatrics and now splits her time between caring for children with diabetes and endocrine disorders at Riley Children's Hospital, teaching and working in the deans office at IUSM. Her research has focused on hypopituitarism and precocious puberty and she is completing a research study of the cognitive and behavioral effects of growth hormone treatment in children. Her focus in the office of faculty affairs and professional development includes helping clinical faculty develop scholarship, career development and leadership training and medical education.


Williams, Dr. Mark

photo of Dr. Mark WilliamsDr. Mark Williams (Miami, 1988) is Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. Dr. Williams graduated from Miami University with a Bachelors of Arts in Zoology. He went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1992. Dr. Williams completed his residency in family medicine at Miami Valley Hospital Dayton, Ohio. He maintained a private practice for 15 years prior to becoming Chief Medical Office at Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, Ohio in 2010. Dr. Williams is currently serving as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.


Wilson, Dr. David

photo of Dr. David WilsonDr. David Wilson is Professor Emeritus of Zoology at Miami University. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Wilson served as Director of the Center for eight years. Dr. Wilson chaired the Premedical Advisory Committee and taught Animal Physiology and a capstone course, Current Issues in Medicine. He received a B.A in Biology from Hofstra University in 1963 and a Ph.D. in Biological Science in 1968 from the University of Delaware. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University before joining the faculty at Miami. Dr. Wilson's name was added to the Center in recognition of his dedication to the Center.
