Phase 1: Discover

As early as your first year, discover your strengths, values, abilities, interests, and skills.

  • Familiarize yourself with the Center for Career Exploration & Success website, including career development programs.
  • Take FOCUS 2 or other career assessments to identify occupations that match your interests, skills, values, personality and potential majors.
  • Start to think about what you are interested in learning, doing, and experiencing while at Miami using the Mapping Your Miami Journey workbook (or try the interactive, online version).
  • Make a tentative selection of a major field of study. Speak with your academic advisor.
  • Participate in volunteer activities and join student organizations to help build communication, teamwork and critical thinking skills.
  • Take EDL 100 – Career Development for the College Student to explore majors and career opportunities.
  • Use the career planning tools on the Center for Career Exploration & Success website to research careers, including Vault Career Insider's career and industry guides (student ID and password required).
  • Create your resume on Optimal Resume  and your LinkedIn profile and have them reviewed in a 15-minute Resume Express Drop-in appointment. Schedule an appointment to have your photograph taken for your LinkedIn profile.
  • Seek career advice from faculty, staff, advisors, and friends. Learn how to meet and get to know faculty and staff.
  • Find a good summer job to develop confidence, skills, and work ethic.
