Chair's Welcome

Photo of LuMing Mao Welcome to the Department of English!

At Miami’s English Department, we prepare students to read and write critically and imaginatively. As an English undergraduate or graduate student, you will develop a sensitivity to and an appreciation of the role of language as an indispensible component of human experience and acquire necessary skills for success in professional and civic life. You will read extensively, become an accomplished writer in print and new digital genres, work closely with faculty, and participate in lively classroom discussions.

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

  • Gain practical experience by participating in community and corporate projects like local writing festivals; publishing effective print and digital communications in a wide variety of genres and styles through class projects, internships, and other experiential opportunities; and working literary magazines, such as Inklings and Oxford Magazine.
  • Learn from top scholars in the English field. Our faculty members are active contributors in their respective areas of study, writing and presenting often. Undergraduate and graduate students benefit from numerous mentoring opportunities.
  • Study abroad, through the department’s Literary London summer program and other overseas programs including Winter School in France, or spend time at Miami’s campus in Luxembourg.
  • Prepare for your future, whether that is graduate or law school or entry into the work force.  Recent alumni have found success in writing, editing, public relations, teaching, advertising, film, business, medicine, and law.

The English Department, the largest on campus, houses a group of distinguished and award-winning faculty committed to excellence in teaching and scholarly and creative performance. We offer four undergraduate majors—Creative Writing, Literature, Linguistics and Professional Writing—and play a prominent role in such affiliated programs as Linguistics. We have an MA, a low residency and residential MFA, and a doctoral program that is ranked 77th nation-wide.

I encourage you to learn more about our English major, the graduate program, student organizations, and international opportunities. Please email me ( or call me (513-529-5221) if you have any questions or if you want to arrange for a tour. Thank you!

All the best,

LuMing Mao
