The Outdoor Pursuit Center Trip Program offers unique opportunities to Miami University students, faculty, staff and surrounding community. Our trips are designed to provide a balance of challenging, educational, and fun activities in a wilderness setting.

Dates and Important Information

Location: Maui, Hawaii

Trip Dates: January 6–18, 2018; Pre Trip Meetings: November 14 and December 5

Activities: During the 12-day field experience students will put theory to practice while:

  • Backpacking in Haleakala National Park
  • Engaging in historical and cultural lessons on the Road to Hana
  • Taking part in a service learning project in the Kipahulu region of Haleakala
  • Experiencing a traditional Hawaiian meal at a native taro farm
  • Sea kayaking, whale watching & snorkeling with sea turtles
  • Learning to surf

What is provided: accommodations, transportation in Maui, activity equipment, instruction, activity meals

Program Fee: $1900

Spring Break

Appalachian Trail hiking

Backpack the iconic Appalachian Trail

Come join the OPC on a wilderness Spring Break adventure as we backpack 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Northern Georgia and North Carolina. The AT stretches almost 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine and is renowned as one of the most prominent, oldest, and most biologically diverse footpaths in the US.

Dates and Important Information

Location: North Carolina and Georgia

Trip Dates: March 17–25

Info Session: December 6th at 8:00 p.m. in the OPC classroom

Activities: The journey begins with an introduction to basic backpacking techniques. With your pack loaded, hiking boots laced, we’ll hit the trail to hike and camp over 50 miles of the legendary Appalachian Trail.

What is Provided: Transportation, back-country meals, backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping Pads, tents, stoves, cooking gear, group gear, and outdoor instruction.

Bahamas Sailing

Bahamas Sailing

Come experience a 7-day sailing adventure in the Bahamas. Work alongside the captains and crew one of two 40' sailboats. As members of the crew, we will take part in sailing the boat, preparing meals, and other activities needed to run the boat. No experience is necessary - the captains will teach us everything we need to know.

Dates and Important Information

Location: Bahamas

Trip Dates: March 17–23, 2018; Info Session: September 27 and October 4, 7:00–8:00p.m.

Activities: Pick up all the sailing lingo as we practice hoisting and trimming the sails, learn basic principles of navigation, and gain a new appreciation of our marine environment. We will snorkel in living coral reefs and ocean waters, try kayaking and paddleboarding, swim with turtles and rays, explore island settlements, and climb to the top of the Hopetown lighthouse, the last manually operated lighthouse in the world.

What is provided: instruction, airfare, meals, snorkeling equipment

New Zealand Trip

Outdoor Leadership in New Zealand

On this 20 day journey you will explore New Zealand’s south island by foot, paddle and pedal. Picture yourself 50-feet high climbing an ice wall of the world famous Fox Glacier, paddling your sea kayak through seal colonies off Abel Tasman, biking the Otago Rail Trail through tawny-toned hillsides and backpacking through beautiful forests and mountains.

Course Dates: May 22–June 14, 2018

Info Session: October 5, 11 and November 7, 28 - 8:30 p.m. in the Outdoor Pursuit Center Classroom

This course, EDT 485, is 3-6 variable credit hours.

Have you always wanted to go white water rafting and don’t see a trip on our schedule? How about rock climbing, backpacking, or canoeing? The Outdoor Pursuit Center can design and lead a custom trip specifically for you and your group. Nearly any outdoor activity can be planned to nearly any destination. We’re happy to work with the needs of you and your group.
