Miami University student Amberly Szczerbiak: a Q-and-A with Ohio Fairs’ Queen

It’s summer and that means county fairs and the Ohio State Fair are in full swing. Amberly Szczerbiak, a rising sophomore with a double major in Strategic Communications and Biology, was crowned Ohio Fairs’ Queen in January. We caught up with her to see what it’s been like serving in this busy role traveling the state.
What’s it been like to be making the rounds as Ohio Fairs’ Queen and what does that entail?
It’s been such an incredible and meaningful experience. As Ohio Fairs’ Queen, I travel to county and independent fairs all across the state to support local royalty, meet with fair boards, and celebrate the traditions that make each fair so special. I also get to represent the Ohio Fair Managers Association at various events and meetings, which has been such an honor.
One of the most exciting parts of this role is getting to be involved in the Ohio State Fair. I’ll be attending a variety of events and ceremonies, and it’s such a privilege to be part of something so deeply rooted in Ohio’s agricultural heritage. It’s definitely kept me busy, but I’ve loved every second. Every fair has its own charm and community, and getting to be a small part of so many has been amazing.

Your favorite part?
It’s hard to choose just one. But some of the things that have meant the most to me are the incredible people I’ve met and the relationships I’ve built along the way.
This role has allowed me to connect with some of the most genuine, passionate, and hardworking individuals — from fair boards and royalty members to 4-H and FFA exhibitors who pour their hearts into everything they do. I’ve especially loved supporting youth in agriculture and getting to cheer on the next generation as they show animals, present their projects, and take pride in their accomplishments. Watching them grow in confidence and character is such a powerful reminder of why this work matters and who we do it all for.
It’s not just the youth, though. It’s also the opportunity to support Ohio’s agricultural businesses and celebrate the many people who work tirelessly behind the scenes in our state’s No. 1 industry. From local producers and small business owners to farm families and longtime fair supporters, it’s been an honor to recognize and uplift the people who help keep Ohio agriculture strong. Another part that has meant the world to me is the family I’ve gained through this experience, especially within the Ohio Fair Managers Association. OFMA is truly the most dedicated and impactful organization I’ve ever been part of.
Toughest part if there is one? I'm guessing it might be the heat.
The heat can definitely be intense, especially during July fair season. But for me, the hardest part has been juggling everything at once. Alongside all the traveling, I live on a family farm, so there are always animals to care for at home. I’m also working this summer and taking a few online classes, so keeping everything balanced can be a challenge. That said, I’m incredibly grateful for all of it. This is such an amazing opportunity, and even on the busiest days, I’m reminded how lucky I am to be doing something I love.

Your mom (Shannon Ward Szczerbiak ’99) was the Fayette County Fair Queen in 1995. What was it like following in her footsteps?
She’s always been one of my biggest role models, and to share that connection with her has made this experience even more meaningful.
She was there the night I was crowned the 2024 Fayette County Fair Queen and again when I was crowned Ohio Fairs’ Queen this January. She was the first person I looked for in the crowd and the first person I hugged after both competitions.
Both of my parents are proud Miami alumni, which makes my time at Miami feel even more special! I grew up hearing about their experiences and loving the school from a young age. Then when I went on my own college visit, I completely fell in love. It just felt like home from the moment I stepped on campus. Being able to share that connection with both of them has meant so much to me, and I know it makes them proud to see me carrying on the RedHawk tradition in my own way.

Your dad (Hall of Fame basketball player Wally Szczerbiak ’99) also was able to join you at the Ohio State Fair?
My dad came to the Ohio State Fair ribbon-cutting ceremony and then spent the entire day with me enjoying the fair. My whole family was there, too, and it was so special to have all of their support and share in the excitement of our wonderful state fair together. My dad has always been such a great supporter in everything I do. His encouragement has pushed me to dream big and work hard, and I’m so grateful for his belief in me.
How many county fairs will you be visiting as Ohio Fairs’ Queen?
Right now, I’m trying to visit as many county and independent fairs as possible. There are 94 in total, and while it would be a dream come true to make it to every single one, I also want to make sure that each visit is meaningful, where I can take the time to truly connect with people and create lasting memories. So far, I’ve been doing my best to see them all ... and who knows, we just might get there.
I plan my schedule week by week to balance fair visits with other commitments, and I’ve been so lucky to have such a strong support system behind me. My mom has been my main travel partner, my biggest cheerleader, and constant support. She’s been with me through early mornings, long drives, and late nights, and I truly couldn’t do this without her.
I’ve also been fortunate to have several other amazing family members join me along the way, as well as a very supportive Senior Fair Board from Fayette County. They’ve offered their time and encouragement, and it’s meant so much to know I have so many people willing to hit the road with me. I’m so grateful for the team of people helping me make this journey so special.

All of that yummy fair food — do you have a favorite treat?
Fried Oreos. They’re such a fun treat and something I always look forward to when fair season rolls around. I also can’t resist a basket of fresh-cut fries. There’s just something about walking through a fair with fries in hand that makes the whole experience feel even more nostalgic and special.
With a new school year starting next month, how has your Miami experience been so far?
It’s been amazing. I’ve really loved my time at Miami. The professors have been so supportive, the campus is beautiful, and the community has been so welcoming. Everyone I’ve met has been so kind and encouraging, and it truly feels like such a close-knit and uplifting environment. Miami is just an all-around wonderful school, and I feel really lucky to be part of it. I’ve already made so many great memories, and I’m excited to continue building on those over the next few years.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Anything else to add?
Just how incredibly thankful I am. This has truly been the experience of a lifetime, and I feel so honored to represent something as special as Ohio’s fairs. The people I’ve met, the memories I’ve made, and the lessons I’ve learned will stay with me long after my sash comes off, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
