J. Scott Brown (PhD, Duke University 2002) is a professor in and chair of the Department of Sociology and Gerontology and a research fellow with Scripps Gerontology Center. Dr. Brown teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in sociology and gerontology, including Sociology of Aging and the Life Course, Research on Inequality in Aging and Health, and Quantitative Methods and Statistics. 

Dr. Brown's research interests are focused on wealth and health inequalities across the life course with particular emphasis on gender and race differences in physical and mental health. He has published numerous research articles in these areas across a broad spectrum of journals including Demography, Journals of Gerontology: Social Sciences, Journal of Marriage and Family, Social Forces, and Social Science & Medicine. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Center for Education Statistics. 

Dr. Brown received a B.A. in history and sociology from Furman University, a M.S. in applied sociology from Clemson University, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University. Prior to joining the faculty of Miami University in 2005, Dr. Brown was an NIH-funded post-doctoral fellow at the Carolina Population Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
