Teaching Interests
My primary goals in teaching psychology are to create an inclusive classroom environment that focuses on student-centered learning and fosters critical thinking. I believe that students engage more in the learning process when they can find personal relevance and meaning in psychological constructs and theories. At the undergraduate level, I have recently taught our department's introductory course on psychopathology, as well as a senior capstone focused on LGBTQ+ mental health. At the graduate level, I am currently teaching several courses in the department's clinical psychology program, including lifespan psychopathology and adult clinical interventions.
Research Interests
Broadly, my research examines how stigma shapes body image and eating behaviors of LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as how protective factors (e.g., community connectedness) can buffer against these effects. A central aim of my research is to expand our understanding as to why rates of body image concerns and eating pathology are elevated among LGBTQ+ people. To that end, I employ quantitative and qualitative approaches, as well as rely upon well-established theories (e.g., minority stress, intraminority gay community stress) to inform my research. Currently, my lab is testing an integrative model of prior theories (e.g., objectification, minority stress) to more comprehensively identify determinants that influence body image and eating pathology among LGBTQ+ populations. As a licensed psychologist, I’m also passionate about research focused on training future clinicians in evidence-based, LGBTQ-affirmative mental health treatment. To that end, an additional line of my research utilizes theories from implementation science to examine ways to effectively train providers and trainees in LGBTQ-affirmative interventions.
