Research Bio
Jessica Sparks received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University (2007), where she was the recipient of the Distinguished University Fellowship Award for 2002 and 2007. She holds a B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame in Pre-Medical Studies and Philosophy, and she earned a Master’s degree in Anatomy from The Ohio State University.
After receiving her Ph.D., Dr. Sparks joined the faculty of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Wake Forest School of Medicine as a tenure-track Instructor.
From 2007 to 2012, she also held a primary faculty appointment in the Virginia Tech – Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences.
Dr. Sparks is trained in biomechanics, specializing in soft tissue mechanical characterization and computational biomechanical modeling. As the Director of the Soft Tissue Mechanics Laboratory at Wake Forest, she led the development of a novel nano-indentation device to quantify liver matrix elasticity at the cellular scale. She also pioneered the use of porohyperviscoelastic constitutive models to quantify fluid flow and pressure in the liver interstitium.
Her graduate students and advisees have received multiple awards at prominent national student research symposia, including the Injury Biomechanics Symposium and the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium. Dr. Sparks has served as the Principal Investigator for extramurally funded research on topics ranging from surgical simulation to the biomechanics of hemostatic dressings for combat trauma. Her research has generated 36 peer-reviewed publications, 3 book chapters, 2 patent applications, and 25 conference presentations.
Dr. Sparks joined Miami University as an Associate Professor in August 2012. She was promoted to Professor in 2018. Dr. Sparks is actively engaged in teaching and research activities in the Bioengineering program. Her current areas of research encompass additive manufacturing (3D printing), scaffold biofabrication, medical simulation, and liver bioengineering.
