Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band Holiday Concert

A free concert celebrating the holiday season will be performed by the Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band (SOSB) under the direction of Chris Brandenburg, Conductor, and Dan Nichols, Associate Conductor.  The concert is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 10 in the Dave Finkelman Auditorium at Miami University Regionals’ Middletown campus.

The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band will start the concert off with Claude T. Smith’s arrangement of Symphonic Prelude on Adeste Fidelis.  Other holiday favorites will include “A Christmas Intrada” by Alfred Reed, “A Canadian Brass Christmas Suite” arranged by Calvin Custer and “C’est Noel” by Andre Jutas.

No one will be disappointed by the whimsical “Immer Kleiner” composed by Adolf Schreiner for the clarinet.  Luanne Smith, a clarinet player, will be joined by her elf, Kylie Feldkamp, as her clarinet becomes smaller and smaller.  Luanne started playing clarinet at the age of 9.  After earning awards and accolades throughout high school, Luanne attended the University of Cincinnati College - Conservatory of Music and Northern Kentucky University where she graduated with honors.  She was a clarinetist/oboist with the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division and served during Desert Storm.  Later, Luanne returned to Saudi Arabia as a civilian, where she taught music in the British School in Al Khobar and private lessons on clarinet, oboe, flute and saxophone.  She has been an educator and performer for over 20 years and currently performs with the Tri-state Chamber Players and the SOSB.

For those of you interested in more serious music the band will perform a beautiful prayer, “On A Hymnsong of Lowell Mason” by David R. Holtsinger.  March lovers will enjoy John Philip Sousa’s, “Nobles Of The Mystic Shrine.” as well as Carl Teike’s, “Old Comrades,” directed by Dan Nichols.

We will conclude the concert with everyone’s favorites, “A Christmas Festival” and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson as Santa visits all of those young at heart.

The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band is made up of community members, professional and semi-professional musicians from as far north as Dayton Ohio and as far south as Northern Kentucky. Miami students and selected high school students are also among band members.  The Band is now in its 49th season with Chris Brandenburg, Miami University adjunct professor of music, having directed 34 of those seasons. The band is sponsored by Miami University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement, the Middletown Symphony Orchestra Legacy Fund at the Middletown Community Foundation and The Miriam G. Knoll Charitable Foundation. Please see the concert program for information on how you too can become a patron of the Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band with your tax-deductible monetary donation.
