Graduate Studies

The Department of English has a national reputation for graduating top-rate scholars who are excellent researchers, teachers, writers, and editors. Our graduate program is designed to be large enough to produce nationally competitive scholars and writers, but small enough to ensure that each individual  receives mentoring and engaged interaction with our award-winning faculty.

For this reason, we maintain a very high placement rate for our MA students into PhD or MFA programs or professional positions related to their degree. Our placement rate for PhD graduates into full time academic positions is significantly higher than the latest reports from the Modern Language Association, with recent (2014-2015) graduates having accepted tenure-line positions at Auburn University, University of Maryland College Park, Baruch College, and Xavier University, among others.

We offer two MA degrees with concentrations in Composition and Rhetoric, and Literature; two MFA degrees in Creative Writing, one residential and one low-residency; an MAT through the Ohio Writing Project; an Adult TESOL Graduate Certificate; and two PhD programs in Composition and Rhetoric and Literature.  Each of these cohorts is strong in themselves, but one of the hallmarks of our outstanding graduate program is the opportunities we provide for working in the overlaps and intersections of each of those fields, as well as the opportunity for interdisciplinary teaching and research.
