Nominees were judged based on academic achievement, personal goals for future practice, involvement in academic research, clinical and interpersonal skills, evidence of leadership, volunteerism and evidence of passion and educational enrichment outside of the required academic curriculum.
Kayla Amberger was nominated by the Miami faculty to receive the Outstanding Graduate Student Award and Sarah Laane was nominated to receive the Outstanding Undergraduate Award at the 2017 OSLHA convention. These nominations are based on academics, leadership, dedication to the field, and interpersonal skills. Along with the award, the students receive a complementary registration for the OSLHA Convention of that year and a one year OSLHA membership. Kayla is now completing her final year in the Master’s program and Sarah completed in BS in May 2017 is now working on her Master’s in speech-language pathology at the University of Texas-Dallas.
Samantha Julian is a second year speech-language pathology graduate student at Miami University. She is originally from the suburbs of Chicago and completed her undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa in 2015. Sarah applied and was selected for the 2017 OSLHA Student Leadership Development Program.
Samantha states , “I spent one full day at the OSLHA convention with the 9 other students chosen from Ohio learning about leadership and how that can fit into your career as a speech-language pathologist. This program allowed me to discover my strengths and weaknesses as a leader while also providing me with a new network of peers and professionals in the field with similar passions. During the conference, the variety of professionals involved answered questions, provided advice based on their own experiences, and offered mentorship in any future endeavors. In addition, we attended courses related to current issues in the field and professional advocacy and how we as student leaders can make a difference. This conference not only made me learn more about myself as a leader, but opened my eyes to new opportunities and ideas for how I can make a difference and take on leadership roles at a local, state, and national level.”
