LED Bright Stik Lamps in Tunnels

Did you know there are over 5 miles of utility tunnels beneath Miami that allow electricity, plumbing, heating and cooling to flow across campus?  Such an extensive network of tunnels requires ongoing maintenance, and in order to perform this maintenance safely, the tunnel system must be adequately lit.  A lean team was formed to ensure that our tunnels are safely lit as well as to determine if they are lit in the most cost effective manner possible. 

A detailed analysis of the existing tunnel lighting system revealed significant opportunities to improve safety, enhance lighting in certain areas, and lower the cost of lighting the tunnels.  The solution the Lean team found is to standardize on four types of LED bulbs versus the current variety of incandescent, CFL, and LED bulbs.  The result was improved lighting and substantial savings. 

Due to the long life of LED bulbs, they need to be replaced far fewer times, resulting in material and labor savings in addition to the energy savings.  Finally, LED bulbs offer an improved green footprint.  The Lean team was comprised of Mark Lawrence, Todd Joseph, Tony Ferraro, Joel Fellman, Gene Rader, Larry Davidson, and Rick Costello.

Credit Workshop Proposal Review and Approval Process

After completing a successful pilot project with the College of Arts and Science, Global Initiatives (GLI) used the pilot project as a stepping stone to tackle a single submission deadline for credit workshops. This phase of the project included a thorough assessment of the credit workshop proposal submission, review, and approval processes, in addition to rolling out a single submission deadline for workshops.

One of the significant benefits resulting from this project was an overhaul of the proposal form. Past workshop proposals were submitted on an interactive PDF form, which many directors and approvers struggled to open. The Lean team identified the necessary data collection elements, clarified the wording of questions and re-ordered the sections and flow of the form. This information was used to build a new web-based form in Formstack that is accessible, more informative, and allows for data exports.

Another important improvement is that students can now see all the programs offered for the upcoming academic year and register for programs before leaving campus in May. This also enables Miami's workshops to be more competitive with non-Miami program opportunities that students consider as well.

The new process is expected to reduce process time from 16.5 days to 12.9 days. While the reduction in processing time is important, the new process has also shortened the process period to a 3 month period (Jan - March) rather than being spread throughout the year. The condensed processing period provides additional lead time for academic units to coordinate course and workshop offerings which results in better utilization of academic department resources (financial and staff time).

This new process is just one small piece of the overall credit workshop process. However, these improvements have had a trickle down impact on the day to day work of the GLI team and others around campus. It has freed up time for improved program support and to work with faculty to develop strong programming options for Miami’s students.
