A. John Bailer

2005 Recipient - Professor of Statistics

A. John Bailer, Ph.D. is a University Distinguished Professor, emeritus, and founding chair of the Department of Statistics at Miami University. He is a Miami alumnus and received a Ph.D. in biostatistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a staff fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences before joining the faculty at Miami University.

He teaches a broad range of courses including a client-focused data practicum class and a range of other classes including statistical programming and data visualization courses. His research has focused on a breadth of collaborations addressing problems in toxicology, environmental health and occupational safety. He collaborates with journalists to produce the podcast “Stats + Stories.”

He is currently president of the International Statistical Institute, and he previously served on the board of directors of the American Statistical Association. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Society for Risk Analysis and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

His recognition at Miami has included the Benjamin Harrison Medallion (awarded to Miami faculty or staff who have made outstanding national contributions to education), E. Phillips Knox Distinguished Teaching Award (for Miami faculty member in recognition of creative, innovative and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level), Miami University Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction and Mentoring, and the Excellence in Career Development Award.
