TJ Cracas (M.S.)Hello! I'm a first-year M.S. student at Miami. My research deals with the petrology of high-alkali igneous rocks called shonkinites. Advisors: Dr. McLeod |
Madeline Ess (Ph.D.)Hi! I am a Ph.D. candidte here at Miami! My research focus in paleotology specfically looking at paleoecology of past warm shallow marine ecosystems. I work in both the Mesozoic and Ordovician time periods recreating fossil food webs using functional traits of each and every taxa, allowing me to better understand the affects invasion and evolution on a geological time scale within the context of fossil ecosystems. Advisor: Dr. Tyler |
Morgan Gillis (Ph.D.)I'm a second year Ph.D. candidate and my research focuses are shocked mineralogy, environmental geology, and geoscience education. Advisor: Dr. Krekeler |
Kailee Gokey (Ph.D.)I am a 4th year Ph.D. candidate, and my research focuses on urban pollution issues and economic geology. Advisor: Dr. Krekeler |
Dongyi Guo (Ph.D.)My name is Dongyi Guo and I am a Ph.D. candidate working in the geomicrobiology lab. Research interest - I am broadly interested in biogeochemistry, geomicrobiology, and the coevolution of the biosphere and geosphere. Currently, I am focusing on how microbes (methanogens) utilize solid minerals as their trace metal sources for metabolism, specifically, the nitrogen fixation process. Advisor: Dr. Dong |

Keira Johnson (M.S.)Hello! I am a geology masters student focusing on paleoarchitectural reconstruction of mid-Cretaceous channel fills in Northeastern Utah. Advisor: Dr. Currie |
Mehrnaz Khalkhali (Ph.D.)I'm a Ph.D. student with a concentration in seismology in the fascinating realm of geology. My research focuses on enhancing automated techniques for characterizing Swarm and Mainshock-Aftershock earthquakes within the Mexico subduction zone. My academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Physics, followed by a Master's degree in Astrophysics, allowing me to explore subduction-related seismicity via a multidisciplinary lens. Advisor: Dr. Brudzinski |

Idah Ngoma (Ph.D.)I am a Ph.D. candidate, my research focuses on surfacewater-groundwater interactions using stable isotopes of water. Advisor: Dr. Levy |
Omar Nuruzade (M.S.) |
Abigale O'Connor (Ph.D.)I am a first year Ph.D. student and my research is centered around understanding the connection between global temperature change and water resources in arid environments. Advisor: Dr. Rech |
Emily Ratvasky (M.S.)Hello! I am a first year M.S. student working with Jason Rech on freshwater reservoir effects, stream alkalinity, and radiocarbon dating of freshwater mussels within the geologic record of SW Ohio. I graduated from Miami University in May 2020 with my B.A. in Anthropology (minors in archaeology, geology, and museum studies). In between, I worked in Cultural Resource Management archaeology and was a part of some mutual aid organizations in Cleveland. Now I am bouncing between lab work and field work, collecting samples, chemically pretreating them, and sending them off to be radiocarbon dated! Advisor: Dr. Rech |
Nanci Reyes-Guzman (Ph.D.)Hola! I am a Ph.D. student working on volcanoes! I am a volcanologist working with isotopes. My research focuses on magmatic proccess from source to surface in monogenetic eruptions in central-west Mexico and La Palma (Canary Islands). Advisor: Dr. Widom |
Azadeh Sedaghat (Ph.D.)Hello there! I'm a Ph.D. candidate. My passion and focus revolve around igneous petrology, volcanology, and planetary science. I love delving into the fascinating mysteries of Earth's dynamic processes and extending my curiosity to explore the secrets of distant celestial bodies. Advisor: Dr. McLeod |
Rebecca Strauch (M.S.)I am a Geology MS student studying cetacean paleobiology. My current research focuses on understanding temporal and ecological drivers for fusion of the mandibular symphysis in whales. Advisor: Dr. Peredo |

Renie Thomas (Ph.D.)Namaskaram! I am a PhD student and a graduate assistant at Miami University. I completed my BSc (hons.) & MSc in Geology from Fergusson College, University of Pune, India. Before joining Miami, I worked for 13.5 years at the intersection of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDE's) science, traditional knowledge systems, communities, and geo-cognitive mental models to address water security & related risks. My research interest include ecohydrogeology, GDE, isotope hydrology to understand surface and groundwater interactions, socio-hydrogeology; and geocognition tools to understand how people perceive, understand, and make decisions about common pool resources. In my free time I like hiking, cycling and reading books. Advisor: Dr. Rech |
Wilnelly Ventura-Valentin (Ph.D.)I'm a Ph.D. Candidate at Miami University from Puerto Rico. I'm currently working on earthquake swarms and template-matching strategies in southern Mexico. |

Jack Verbrugge (M.S.)Hello, I am a 2nd year M.S. - Thesis student in Geomicrobiology. Nitrogen fixing microbes are widespread across nearly all ecological regimes, yet little is known about the feeding techniques of these microbes. My research involves the relationship between solid minerals and trace metals as a food source for nitrogen fixing microbes - particularly methanogens. Advisor: Dr. Dong |
Emily Waterhouse (M.S.)I am a first year M.S. student working with Claire McLeod on a petrographic analysis of Torrey Canyon and South Pass Wyoming. My general interests include igneous petrology, mineralogy, and volcanology Advisor: Dr. McLeod |
