Strobilomyces Floccopus Spores

Strobilomyces floccopus, also called Strobilomyces strobilaceus, and commonly known as ‘old man of the woods,’ is a species of fungus in the family Boletaceae. It is native to Europe, North America, Japan, Iran and Taiwan.

‘Old Man of the Woods’ blends in with the background landscape of the woods and forests and can be sometimes challenging to find. It has a pyramidal fruit body and overlapping scales which appear on the cap surface. As it ages, it becomes darker and resembles a pinecone rather than the mushroom and is quite resistant to decay, unlike other fungi in the Boletaceae family.

When harvested young this mushroom is edible; although it may have little culinary value.
