Associate Professor of Art History Pepper Stetler wins grant from Andy Warhol Foundation
Associate Professor of Art History, Pepper Stetler, was awarded a grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for her article, “Bringing the Outside In: The Creative Growth Art Center.” The Andy Warhol Foundation’s goal is to support a wide range of artistic expression in America and does so by providing grants for writers’ work.
Arts Writers Grants are awarded in a variety of categories: Articles, Books, and Short-Form Writing and are intended for literature about the arts.
Pepper Stetler’s “Bringing the Outside In: The Creative Growth Art Center,” will be the first in-depth history of the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California—a nonprofit organization founded by Florence and Elias Katz in 1974 that provides open studio space, gallery representation, and exhibition platforms to artists with intellectual disabilities. Stetler’s essay aims to establish the Creative Growth Art Center as integral to the understanding of disability rights advocacy, community-based art practice, and the value of art to human experience in the late 20th century.
Writing projects funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation cover issues that are critical to the understanding of art made in and for various communities and regions, both within the US and abroad.
Stetler teaches courses on the history of photography and modern art. This summer, Stelter will be going to Oakland to research the Creative Arts Growth Center..
