Communication Design Majors and Minors’ work on exhibition at Wertz Art & Architecture Library through May 4th, 2023
Inspired by Miami University's strategic initiatives described at the New Faculty Orientation by President Greg Crawford, the final project for Art 251: Typography invited and challenged students to design an awareness campaign based on their research of one of the following areas: diversity, equity, and Inclusion (DE&I), mental health, or sustainability.
Students learned about the importance of these strategic initiatives, identified key stakeholders, developed content, and designed creative materials. Content creation included posters of varying sizes, brochures, pamphlets, zines, and some piece of collateral design to support their campaign and engage audience participation.
“We are grateful to everyone who made this exhibition possible,” said Assistant Professor Christy Carr. “The idea for the project began during my experience in the New Faculty Orientation, developed as I learned about the wonderful resources Miami University offers, and was created as I collaborated with the talented and supportive librarians of King and Wertz Libraries.”
As part of the process, the class:
- visited the Rare and Artists' Books Collection at King Library for a speed dating session with 22 impressive selections curated and facilitated by Rachel Makarowski,
- visited the Makerspace for a tour and a workshop facilitated by Sarah Nagle, and
- visited Wertz Library to view the space for the exhibition of their final projects and participated in a Zine workshop led by Stefanie Hilles.
Project goals for students included:
- increase awareness of DEI, Mental Health, and Sustainability,
- find intersections with their own interests and lived experiences,
- create some experiences that bring attention to important content,
- demonstrate typographic knowledge and skill, and
- gain experience with communication design from research and initial concepts through production for a target audience.
“I'd also like to give a shout-out to the eager and talented students whose work is on display—their energy and enthusiasm for the topics, combined with their commitment to creating engaging and insightful work, made this journey incredibly rewarding,” Carr added.
Visitors can view the exhibition at Wertz and experience how students design to make a difference.
