Professor Bruce Murray to perform at Oxford Community Arts Center this summer

Pianist Bruce Murray returns to the Oxford Community Arts Center Monday, June 26, to perform the first of three summer concerts collectively titled “Mondays with Murray: A Musical Exploration.”

“The Brant Ballroom at the Oxford Community Arts Center is a beautiful space for hearing music and for playing it,” said Murray. “Everyone who performs there feels the intense connection with the audience. It’s special, and it’s a privilege to present concerts there.”

Murray is a professor at Miami University and an active recitalist known especially for his performances of Bach, Beethoven, new music, and music be neglected composers.

Concert I: Music of J.S. Bach
Monday, June 26, 6PM

Preludes and Fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier

Many consider Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier his greatest work, and it has influenced and inspired musicians up to the present day.  The WTC, as it is known, covers an emotional and musical range as vast as anything produced in the whole of Western art music.  Despite its lofty reputation the WTC is completely approachable and accessible.  Some of its pieces are known to anyone who has had a few years of  piano lessons.


Concert II: Sad/Happy
Monday, July 10, 6PM

The program features intimate, personal works that nonetheless reveal emotional ranges that run the gamuts.  Composers include Ludwig van Beethove, Gabriel Fauré, Scott Joplin, and the all-but-forgotten French composer Melanie Bonis.


Concert III: The Wide World
Monday, July 17, 6PM

Music from various times and places, including works by J.S. Bach (German, in an arrangement by the Italian Ferruccio Busoni), Frédéric Chopin (Polish-French), Arvo Pärt (Estonian), and the great, pioneering African-American composer Florence B. Price.

 

Concerts are free to the public and occur in the Brant Ballroom of the Oxford Community Arts Center.
