In August 2022, communication and design fifth-year Bella Wallace picked herself up and moved to Waco, Texas. In December, she returned to Miami University with brand new inspiration for her career after graduation.

Wallace experimented with graphic design and illustration through an internship with Magnolia Journal that fall semester. She participated on its creative team as the only student from Miami.

Throughout her time, she designed a story about two interior designers from Los Angeles, worked alongside the magazine’s founders and landed features in the Spring 2023 issue, as well as advance ones for the remainder of this year.

“It was so rewarding, and the most fun job I’ve ever had,” Wallace said.

The magazine loved her initial drawing – a tiny chef for one of the recipe pieces – so they granted her lots of freedom for other opportunities. But best of all, she got offered both of the internships she applied for, then found out from her hiring manager that she was the first to ever do so.

She chose Magnolia after following it closely over the summer while searching for internships. Her interviewers seemed excited about her artistic talent, just like she hoped.

“I honestly had zero expectations, but felt that I had to apply because I love publication,” Wallace said. “It kind of felt like a risky move, but I’m so glad that I did.”

Wallace thanks her parents and sister for their support and assistant teaching professor of art Christy Carr for allowing her to keep up with her class online.

Now, the graduate sometimes freelances for Magnolia and plans to become an independent artist with the business she launched in January, “Bella Bee Made”.

“It’s been pretty successful so far!” Wallace said. “This has been a dream of mine for a while and this internship is what cemented it as a possibility in my head.”
