Miami University assistant professor of communication design, Dilge Dilsiz, photographed her most recent project, a series composed of metallic inkjet prints called “Wavering Between,” in seven states over the course of a year. Now, one of the photographs lies in the 77th Ohio Annual Exhibition in the Great Gallery of the Zanesville Museum of Art.

Her work uses a hauntological approach to represent the human experience of diaspora, in which she uses slow shutter speed while photographing her subjects and includes poetry in the form of vinyl text in the native language of her subjects.

“I believe that these individuals are charged with an enormous burden that calls upon them to sacrifice their individual identities and heritage to satisfy the demands of the new culture that they settle into,” Dilsiz said.

She also had a few alternate photographs exhibited in various shows around New York. The slide in the 77th Ohio Annual Exhibition, however, also won the Dorothy G. Pieper award.

“It's empowering to see this series get so much attention as I truly believe it helps create a safe space, recognition and familiarity for marginalized individuals who might be going through their own struggles,” Dilsiz said. “Additionally, the work provides a space of reflection for those who may not be able to fully grasp the weight of the challenges certain communities go through, at first glance.”

As a Turkish artist living in Cincinnati, Dilsiz strives to explore the relationship between culture and identity in her art and plans to expand this series.

“It is lovely to feel that my work is accepted and welcome in the art spaces in Ohio,” Dilsiz said.

Anyone can visit “Wavering Between” in Zanesville, Ohio until September 9.
