ACUE: Transforming Assignments in the Age of AI
Are AI resistant assignments possible? AI’s rapid evolution calls into questions how we can use students' work to accurately represent their learning.
In this thought exercise, you'll embark on a brainstorming expedition to harness the power of Al to develop more creative and motivating assignments. Foster a culture of academic integrity by increasing transparency around assignment purpose and expectations, including how, when, and why students can or cannot use Al. Plus, explore new assignment ideas, such as Al-powered visuals and simulations, to ignite students' motivation and deepen their understanding.
By engaging in a series of thought-provoking activities and challenges (see below), you'll expand your thinking around assignment design possibilities and be better equipped to make your own assignments more creative and motivational, while always keeping student learning as your north star.

Course Opportunity |
|
1 | Students are using AI to complete traditional assignments; therefore, the work submitted does not accurately represent student learning. | This offering empowers faculty to consider shifting their approaches to evaluation, when appropriate; prioritize process over product; and refine rubrics to better represent expectations for student work in the era of AI. |
2 | Students may be less motivated to complete assignments themselves when they have easy access to tools that can do the work for them. | This thought exercise highlights the crucial role of purpose, demonstrating how clearly communicating "the why" behind assignments and AI usage enhances student motivation. Faculty will also expand their assignment design toolkit with innovative, AI-powered assignment ideas that promote critical thinking and creativity and offer opportunities for individualized learning. |
3 | I'm concerned students will use AI no matter what I do. | This offering prompts faculty to consider how discussing AI policies with students and encouraging the use of disclosure agreements promote integrity. Being explicit about the purpose of an assignment and when/how AI may be used is also recognized as a powerful motivator. |
