Best Practices in Service Learning: Developing and Implementing SL Pedagogy across Disciplines

Purpose and Description

Service Learning provides the opportunity to students and faculty to connect to the local community, examine complex social issues, enhance profession skills and apply critical thinking. This FLC will focus on establishing coherency in the application of best SL practices and provide professional support to faculty members engaged or interested in this pedagogy.

Activities

  • Members will attend FLC meetings once every 3 weeks.
  • Members will examine practical aspects of Service Learning Pedagogy including how it differs from Experiential Learning, Internships, Volunteerism, etc.
  • Members will explore the development and implementation of a SL designated course, for Oxford courses, or Study Abroad/Study Away programs.
  • Members will identify best practices in teaching a SL course based on research.
  • Members will analyze the pedagogy of assessment in SL courses, including the role of reflection.
  • Members will be involved in creating guidelines for the integration of the community partner in the SL curriculum.
  • Members may have the opportunity to examine challenges and conflicts arising from SL and generate, create, or share ideas on how to overcome them.
