Why Miami University?
Miami gave me the freedom and flexibility to commute locally, allowing me to live at home to save money while still working part-time.
How did you choose your major?
I was originally an Education major before I switched to Integrative Studies. As a young, busy college student, life was a balancing act that I didn't have a good handle on. I realized Education was more of a commitment than I was able to take on, so I wanted to be a part of something meaningful that all of my previous hard work could be put towards. I heard about Integrative Studies, and it was explained to me as a way to "create my own degree." This way, I could still make a difference in the lives of children, even if it was not from an educational standpoint. I put all of my classes and hard work into a "co-major" of Child Studies and Youth Development and Child Care Administration and Management, and I minored in Child Studies.
How have any faculty, staff, or mentors at the University played a significant role in your journey?
Without the Integrative Studies program component of interning at a local non-profit, I would not have made the community connections that I did during my program. Along with the professional relationships that have come from it, years beyond the classroom.
Other Notable Experience
I mentioned previously that my realm of expertise was working with children, so when it came time to choose the community organization that I would intern at, I was in a dilemma. On one hand, there was a program where I could work on literacy skills with children at the park, or there was a program that I could assist in marketing and fundraising to benefit those suffering from addiction. I had zero previous experience in that area, but figured this is a true issue in our community, and it would allow me to gain skills I didn't previously have. It was a risky bet that truly paid off. I learned so much, and those skills have also helped me as I now work for a local agency that sometimes services children who are impacted by addiction. It's come full circle. Playing it safe and staying in your comfort zone may not always be the best choice for you in the long run.
Advice to Prospective Students
If one path doesn't work out, find another. There's always a way, it just may not be the one you originally planned for yourself.
How did your Miami experience influence your decision to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters?
I knew that because my degree was super versatile, I could work with children in a variety of different capacities. Although my Miami experience didn't directly influence my decision to join BBBS, it helped in the long run.
What is a meaningful moment you’ve had as a mentor, staff member, or board member with BBBS?
I truly enjoy getting to know these kids (both our high school/college volunteers and the elementary-aged students they are matched with). It has been meaningful to get to see how these bigs truly impact their littles, and vice versa! Our program really makes a difference!
What skills or values from your time at Miami do you find yourself using in this role?
I think I truly learned so much from being in the Integrative Studies program, which was centered around community and difference-making in my own backyard. Because of the program and interning outside of my comfort zone, I learned invaluable skills that I still use to this day (about 501c3's marketing, fundraising, etc.) These were lessons not all taught in the classroom, but because of Miami, I am eternally grateful.
Why do you think so many Miami alumni are involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters?
I think Miami University, in general, has played a big role, specifically the Social Work program and the Integrative Studies program. We have such a great partnership with Miami, and there is an opportunity for everyone to become involved, no matter their background.
What would you say to encourage other Miami students or alumni to consider volunteering with BBBS?
You never know the difference you can make in the life of a child. If you have the free time, I highly encourage you to become involved in some way. Whether that be volunteering, interning, or even contributing financially. We cannot operate without the support of others. We are one big family working toward the same goal: impacting future generations, one child at a time.
