Bowl appearance, winning streak help put spotlight on Miami athletics
The RedHawks’ recent trip to the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl in December was broadcast across the United States on The CW Network, and more than 1,300 unique social media posts were created around the university and the game.
Social media impressions for Miami’s channels increased by nearly 12% year over year in relation to bowl coverage, generating close to 88 million impressions. The university published 99 original pieces of content, a 36% increase over the past year.
Search traffic also increased on game day, rising by 20%. Miami’s publicity for earned media and social media around the Arizona Bowl is valued at $447 million, nearly double that of the previous year.
The RedHawks were making their sixth straight bowl appearance and 17th all time. Miami has been bowl eligible nine of the last 10 seasons.
“We were very, very excited that we got to go again,” Miami football coach Chuck Martin said during a special team meal in December at Gross Center celebrating the team’s return to the Arizona Bowl.
With an undefeated 18-0 start, Miami’s men’s basketball team also is receiving considerable interest. RedHawk great Wally Szczerbiak has spotlighted his alma mater both in his role on CBS Sports broadcasts and through social media. More than 70 stories on Miami and its unbeaten start have appeared in markets across the country.
“We’re just extremely grateful for all the support that we’re getting right here at Miami, from Oxford, and all the surrounding areas,” Miami men’s basketball coach Travis Steele said recently.
