Bruce Drushel
Bruce Drushel (Ph.D., Ohio University, 1991) is a Professor in the Department of Media, Journalism and Film at Miami University.
His teaching and research interests are in the areas of media policy and economics, media audiences, media history, and LGBTQ representation in electronic media and film.
He is founding co-editor of the journal Queer Studies in Media & Popular Culture and has served as guest-editor of special issues of Journal of Homosexuality, Journal of American Culture, and Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture.
He has edited or co-edited five books: LGBTQ Culture: The Changing Landscape (Routledge, 2021), Sontag and the Camp Aesthetic: Advancing New Perspectives (with Brian M. Peters, Lexington Books, 2017), Star Trek: Fan Phenomenon (Intellect Books, 2013), The Ethics of Emerging Media (with Kathy German, Continuum, 2011), and Queer Identity/Political Reality (with Kathy German, Cambridge Scholars Publishers, 2009).
He has published 30 chapters in anthologies and 25 articles in journals, as well as 11 reviews, reports, and reference entries. A member of Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association for over 36 years, he has received its David M. Sokol Award (2012) and Presidential Award (2013 and 2018) for his service to the organization and currently serves as a member of its endowment committee and chairs its LGBTQ+ Studies interest group.
In 2022, he received the Prodesse Quam Conspici Award from the President of Miami University and the Leroy F. Aarons Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
