Why Miami University?
I wanted a personal and intimate experience for my college career. The professors are unmatched in my opinion because they offer so much one-on-one support. Another wonderful aspect is the cost effectiveness of the regional campuses which will help me greatly long term. I honestly love the regional campuses and feel strongly that I made a good decision coming to Miami University!
How did you choose your major?
It was not any easy decision but my advisor was instrumental in helping me. Ultimately I love working with people and the environment. I’ve taken so many courses that I have adored that my heart was being pulled in different directions. But at the end of the day I had to follow my passions! I have a passion for talking and sharing ideas with others which helped me land myself into Communication Studies. When I found out I could co-major in Environmental Science I knew I had found my niche and I’m very happy with my ultimate decisions!
How have any faculty, staff, or mentors at the University played a significant role in your journey?
The entire Rentschler Library staff at Hamilton has been instrumental in my success at school and I would love to personally highlight Brea McQueen and Samantha Young for being beyond helpful. I highly recommend getting close to your university's library! I also think I had a great set of professors such as Dr. Bennyce Hamilton, Dr. Dean Castillo, professor McKenzi Monday, and Dr. Theresa Kulbaga who has been wonderful in helping me build confidence in my passions.
Other Notable Experience
I’ve had great experiences at the fall fair and international events. I went on a trip to Tennessee with the international students which was a blast. It allowed me to gain perspective on international students' personal experiences in U.S. academia and allowed them the same perspective into our culture! I found it not only fun but also educational.
Advice to Prospective Students
Talk to people who you’ve never met. Give yourself and your professors grace. You’re all working toward a goal of success for yourself so ultimately the most important decision you can make for yourself is to invest in what you’re doing. No goal is too small if it means something to you!
How has Miami provided you with opportunities to engage in research, partnerships, or experiences that shaped your way of thinking?
They have wonderful environmental science courses that offer many different research resources.
How have you used what you learned in different subjects to solve a problem or come up with a new idea?
Especially through communication courses I’ve learned how to incite change into the hat I want to see in myself and my discourse communities.
