Why Miami University?

Returning to school after a 42-year absence was a significant step, and I sought a place that felt welcoming and supportive. Miami University stood out because it offers an excellent education with the flexibility I need. From the moment I first connected with the campus, it felt like the right fit. The smaller class sizes, encouraging faculty, and strong sense of community helped ease my transition back into college life. It just felt like a place where I could succeed, and I’m grateful I made that choice.

How did you choose your major?

When I returned to Miami after many years, I took some time to review my old grades and the classes I had enjoyed the most. Liberal Studies stood out as the best fit — it provided me with the flexibility to build on what I had already accomplished while exploring subjects that still interest me today. It felt like the right path for returning to school with a fresh start, but without losing the work I had already put in.

How have any faculty, staff, or mentors at the University played a significant role in your journey?

Returning to Miami after so many years, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the support I’ve received has made all the difference. Dr. Caryn Neumann, my advisor, has been incredible. She’s answered every question, helped me navigate classes, and offered steady encouragement along the way. I genuinely believe that my success so far is due to caring advisors like her and others at Miami who genuinely want students to thrive. That kind of support means a lot, especially for someone returning after many years.

Other Notable Experience

Returning to Miami after so many years, I was honestly a bit apprehensive. I wasn’t sure if I could manage a full course load while balancing other responsibilities. But I quickly realized I wasn’t alone. The professors were understanding and supportive, and that made a huge difference. One experience that stands out was a professor who went above and beyond by setting up a weekly Zoom session just for extra help. It gave me the chance to talk through assignments, ask questions, and stay on track. That kind of personal support made me feel seen, and it reminded me that I belonged here.

Advice to Prospective Students

Don’t be afraid to ask for help — there are so many people here who truly want to see you succeed. Take things one step at a time, and don’t compare your path to anyone else’s. Whether you're just starting out or returning after many years, like I did, it’s never too late to learn and grow. Stay connected with your advisors, stay organized, and believe in yourself. You’re capable of more than you think.
